Got a call from someone parked near the upper end of Alameda Padre Serra, just inside the Upper East. She had come back to her 2016 MINI Convertible and her fob simply stopped being recognized. Not intermittent. Just done. The car sat there looking fine, roof up, no visible damage, just a dead relationship between the fob and the vehicle.
She had already done the obvious thing and bought a CR2032 from a pharmacy on the way. Swapped it herself, right there in the parking lot. Still nothing.
When I got there I popped the fob open on the hood where she could watch. The new battery was seated, contacts looked okay. I ran the diagnostic tool through the OBD port to check the pairing status. The fob showed as registered but the signal read was erratic -- the fob internals had given up, not the battery, not the car's side of the system. We needed a new smart key.
Cut and programmed the replacement on site. Walked every function: door handle touch unlock on both sides, the start button, all four buttons on the fob. Everything behaved. The old fob got erased from the system in the same session so it's just a dead piece of plastic now.
She asked about the dealer timeline out of curiosity. I told her they'd want the car brought in, probably a day or two for parts, and the bill would be noticeably heavier. She'd been standing in a parking lot for about forty minutes total by the time I left. That was the whole job.
