Got a call from a guy near the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum. His 2016 MINI Convertible, the F57, keys stolen out of a bag while he was walking the harbor.
He had already talked to the MINI dealer. They told him two weeks for parts, then a tow-in appointment after that, and the car would sit with them for the better part of a day. Meanwhile his stolen keys could still start the car. That part was eating at him more than anything.
I drove out and connected through the OBD port to the FEM module. On these F-series MINIs, the FEM/BDC is the gatekeeper. Every key lives in that module's memory. I ran a full key reset, which wipes every previously paired NBGIDGNG1 fob from the system, then registered his two new smart keys as the only ones authorized. Once that counter resets, the old fobs are just plastic. They will not unlock, they will not start, they will not even wake the car up.
Cut both emergency insert blades on the hood of the car, tested proximity unlock on all doors, tested push-button start, and cycled the top open and closed just to make sure nothing else was acting up. Everything clean.
He kept glancing at the harbor like someone was going to walk up and try the old key. I get it. But those fobs were dead the second the FEM accepted the new pair.
Whole thing took about 40 minutes, right there on the street, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted.
