Got a call from a guy near Hendry's Beach in Santa Barbara. His 2013 MINI Convertible would not start, and the dash was throwing a steering wheel lock warning along with "No key detected" in the instrument cluster. He had already gone through the usual moves: new CR2032, holding the key right against the column, cycling the ignition. Nothing.
He was sitting in the parking lot with the top down and the sun doing its thing.
I pulled up, popped the round key housing apart on the hood, and found the issue right away. The Hitag2 transponder wafer inside had shifted off its seat. On these KR55WK49333 keys, the chip sits in a small plastic cradle near the blade end. His had cracked at the clip, probably from a drop onto pavement weeks earlier. The chip was still alive but sitting at an angle where the CAS3 ring antenna could not get a clean read.
Transplanted the chip and board into a new housing, cut a fresh blade by decoding his door lock, and ran the CAS3 registration through the diagnostic port. Key turned, steering lock released, engine fired. Then I walked every button: lock, unlock, trunk. All responding.
He told me the dealer in Santa Barbara quoted him a week and a half wait just to get the part in, plus the tow to get there. I was done in about 40 minutes in a parking lot. He drove away for a fraction of what they wanted.
