A woman from the Westside came to me through a referral. She had a 2013 MINI Convertible, drove it with the top down most of the time, and her key had taken a fall from a countertop at some point. The housing had a hairline crack running right through the button area. The key still turned in the ignition, still started the car, but the lock and unlock buttons were hit or miss, and the crack was slowly getting worse every time she squeezed it.
She had already called the dealer. They told her the whole key needed to be replaced and gave her a number that made her put the phone down slowly.
I met her where the car was parked, near her place on the Westside. First thing I did was test what was actually working. The transponder read fine. The remote function was weak but alive. The issue was exactly what it looked like: the crack had let the button contact board shift slightly inside the housing, so the buttons weren't making clean contact every press.
I transplanted the internals into a new housing, reseated the battery correctly, and ran through the lock, unlock, and third button to confirm everything was responding clean. Took about twenty minutes parked on the street.
She got back into a key that worked like new. The dealer comparison came up on its own when she saw what I charged. I didn't bring it up.
