Got a call from a guy in the Avenue neighborhood in Ventura. His 2015 MINI Hardtop 4 Door was sitting in his driveway, dash showing "No key detected," and both comfort access handles doing nothing. He had one fob left, the NBGIDGNG1, and it looked rough. Scratched up, the seam slightly split.
I pulled up and he was standing over the car like he was waiting for it to apologize.
Popped the fob open on the hood. The CR2032 was corroded around one edge, and one of the battery terminal clips had green buildup on it. I cleaned the contacts, dropped in a fresh CR2032, and snapped the housing tight. Comfort access came back on both front handles immediately. Start button fired it right up.
Then I ran through everything. Lock, unlock, trunk release, panic. Walked to the driver door, tested the touch sensor, walked to the passenger side, same thing. Checked the range by backing away from the car one step at a time until the handles stopped responding, just to make sure it was reading at normal distance and not a weak signal.
He told me the dealer quoted him days just to get an appointment. He almost ordered a fob online and tried to figure it out himself. Glad he called first. The fix took about ten minutes and cost him a fraction of what the dealer route would have run.
