I was parked near the Serra Cross/Grant Park area, wrapping up another call, when the message came in. A 2015 MINI Hardtop 4 Door, sitting in a lot off Grant Park, owner getting a key-not-detected warning every time she walked up to the car. It would eventually let her in, but the start button was hit or miss.
She had already swapped the battery herself. CR2032, correct type, and she'd done it right. So the battery wasn't it.
When I got there, I ran through the fob first. Buttons were responding, the signal was present. The issue was on the vehicle side, where the fob and the car's security system weren't staying synced the way they should. This is a known weak point on the F55 generation: intermittent communication between the fob and the body electronics, especially when there's been a battery swap or a power interruption. The fob looked healthy on its own. It just needed to be re-paired properly through the diagnostic port.
I connected my tool, cleared the lost sync condition, re-registered her fob, and walked every function: door handles, start button, lock, unlock, and the remaining two buttons. Everything responded cleanly. She tested it herself three times before she'd believe it was done.
She had already called the dealer before reaching out to me. They told her to bring it in, quoted her a wait and a number that made her wince. She paid a fraction of that, in the parking lot, in about 40 minutes.
