I got a call out to Saticoy on a Tuesday afternoon. Guy had a 2016 MINI Hardtop 4 Door sitting in his driveway, and the fob had stopped doing much of anything. He could still get in with the emergency blade tucked inside the key, but the car was throwing a key warning on the dash and he wasn't confident it would start reliably. He'd already put a new battery in. Or thought he had.
When I got there and he handed me the fob, I could feel the housing wasn't fully closed. The battery door had a small gap on one edge. He'd installed the CR2032 but snapped the cover back at an angle, which left one of the battery contacts barely touching. Enough to power the fob intermittently, not enough for consistent communication with the car.
I reseated the battery correctly, closed the housing flush, and then did what I always do before I pack up: walked every function. Lock, unlock, the other buttons, the emergency blade in the door cylinder. By the time I was done he had a fully working key and knew exactly why it had failed.
He asked about a spare while I was still there. A lot of MINI owners don't carry one because they assume the dealer is the only option and it feels like a whole event. It doesn't have to be. I programmed a second fob on site, same visit, same driveway. The dealer had quoted him a wait time and a trip across town. He skipped all of that.
