Got a call from a guy in the Ventura Keys area who was standing next to his 2016 MINI Hardtop 4 Door in a parking lot, holding two dead smart keys. Both NBGIDGNG1 fobs, both with the same problem: comfort access gone, doors not responding to the handle touch, center display flashing "No key detected." He had already been to an auto parts store and bought CR2032 batteries for both. Same behavior after the swap.
He was about to have it towed to the dealer. That would have meant the car sitting there for at least two or three days, which is typical for MINI dealers around here when the key system is involved.
I got there in about 40 minutes. Popped open the first fob on the hood. The CR2032 was fine, seated right. But the internal antenna contact on the board had a hairline crack. Common wear point on these. The second fob had a weak solder joint in the same spot. You could see the discoloration.
Reflowed the contact on the worse one, cleaned up the other, reseated both batteries, then ran a full CAS4+ diagnostic through the OBD port to verify both keys were still registered and the rolling code sync was current. Tested comfort access on every door, the trunk, and the start button.
He stood there watching the door handle unlock work again like he did not trust it. I get that. When something stops working for no obvious reason, you keep waiting for it to fail again. Both fobs, fixed on site, for a fraction of what the dealer would have run him through.
