Got a call from a guy at Pacific View Mall in Ventura. He had finished shopping, walked out to his 2017 MINI Hardtop 4 Door, grabbed the door handle, and nothing happened. Comfort Access just dead. He pulled the fob out of his pocket and hit the unlock button manually. That worked. Car started fine too. But the touch sensors on both front handles acted like they didn't exist.
He sat in the parking lot for a while Googling it and convinced himself the CAS4+ module was failing. Already had a dealer quote in his head and was not happy about it.
I got there and started simple. Popped open the NBGIDGNG1 fob on his hood. The CR2032 had maybe a whisper of charge left, enough for the button press at close range but not enough for the passive polling that Comfort Access needs. That passive signal is always broadcasting, and it drains a weak battery before the active buttons stop working.
New CR2032 in, contacts seated correctly, and I walked him through the test. Left handle, right handle, hatch button, start button, lock on walk-away. Everything came back. He kept opening and closing the door like he was testing it for a fifth time.
No module issue. No programming. Just a battery that was too weak for the passive side of the system. Took about ten minutes and saved him a trip to the dealer.
