I was already running calls in Ventura on a Saturday night when the message came in from East Ventura. A couple had been at a karaoke spot, came out to the parking lot, and the Tiburon was just sitting there not responding to the key fob. They figured it was a dead fob battery. One of them tried holding the fob closer to the door handle. Then tried it again. Then tried it standing on one foot, probably. Still nothing.
They had already started looking up weekend tow rates before one of them searched for a locksmith and found me. I was twelve minutes out.
The Tiburon remote head key is a combined unit, blade and fob in one housing. When these stop responding it usually comes down to a few things: the fob battery gave out, the key lost its pairing to the immobilizer, or the housing took a drop and something shifted inside. This one had all the signs of a fob that had been dying slowly for a while and finally gave out that night.
I pulled the van up, got the key on the hood, and went through it. The blade was fine. The fob housing had a small crack along one edge, the kind you get when it rides loose in a pocket for months. Enough to let the internal contact shift. I had the right replacement shell stocked in a labeled drawer behind my seat, transferred the components over, verified the cut, and ran the programming through my diagnostic equipment.
First try, the doors locked and unlocked clean. Car started without a complaint.
They were back on the road before midnight. The dealer route would have meant leaving the car in that lot all weekend and starting fresh Monday morning, and still paying more than they did with me.
