1997 Hyundai Tiburon
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long should a replacement key hold up on a car this old?

The programming on these older systems doesn't expire or degrade. Once it's paired to the receiver, it stays paired. What actually wears out is the physical hardware: the plastic shell cracks, the keyring eye breaks, and the battery contact tabs inside get fatigued over time, especially if the battery has been swapped more than once by someone pressing the case closed off-center. The blade itself can wear from daily use in the lock cylinder.

Q: What if the new key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

Call me. The work is covered. That said, on a 1997 Tiburon, if a freshly programmed remote stops responding, the first thing I look at is the receiver in the car, not the fob. These older remote receiver units can develop weak solder joints or corrosion on the connector over time, and a marginal receiver will work fine for a few days then go intermittent again.

Q: Can I use the mechanical blade alone if the remote part of the key fails?

Yes. On this generation Tiburon, the door locks and ignition work independently of the remote. If the fob side goes dead, the blade still unlocks the door and starts the car. You just lose the convenience of remote locking and unlocking. That separation is actually useful on a vehicle this age because it means a dead fob isn't a tow situation.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 1997 Tiburon. Can you just program it?

Bring it and I'll check it. The problem with online fobs for older Hyundais is that the listings often group several model years together under one compatibility claim, and the internal frequency or circuit doesn't always match what your specific car's receiver is looking for. If the fob you bought is genuinely the right unit for a 1997 Tiburon, I can work with it. If it's not, trying to force it into the system wastes your time and mine.

1997 Hyundai Tiburon Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call just before 8am from a woman parked at a staffing agency lot in Simi Valley, out near Wood Ranch. She had a 1997 Hyundai Tiburon and her remote head key had gone completely dead overnight. No response from the fob at all. She had a shift assignment she needed to reach before 8:30, and missing that window meant losing the placement entirely.

I was rolling before she finished explaining and pulled in about 20 minutes later. The mechanical side was easy: I decoded the lock and got inside without any fuss. The blade cut was clean and the lock cylinder itself was in decent shape for a car that age.

The fob was the problem. I popped the case and the battery contact tab on one side had folded over, probably from the last time someone swapped the battery in a hurry. The tab wasn't making full contact, which meant the remote was sending nothing. Straightened the tab, seated a fresh battery correctly, and verified the remote was pairing to the car's receiver.

I watched her pull out of that lot with about ten minutes to spare. She made the placement. That part matters more than anything on the invoice.

Hyundai Tiburon Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on older Hyundai vehicles like the Tiburon?▼

We use verified blanks that match your specific vehicle. On a 1997 Tiburon, that means a remote head key shell and blade combination confirmed to work with the car's receiver, not just something that looks close. The risk with cheap online fobs on older Hyundais is that the internal electronics often don't match what the factory receiver expects, and you end up with a fob that locks and unlocks inconsistently or not at all.
