2001 Hyundai Tiburon Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
In Ventura, over in the College Area, a woman called me at 6:30 in the evening from an overflow lot near the pediatrician. Her toddler had spiked a fever and her 2001 Hyundai Tiburon would not start. Key turned, engine cranked, nothing caught. The security light on the dash was blinking steady.
Her Hyundai dealer was already closed for the day.
I got there in about 20 minutes. Used a Lishi HY15 to get the door open without damage, then plugged my IM608 into the OBD-II port under the dash. The Tiburon's Philips 46 transponder chip had stopped communicating with the Shin Chang immobilizer box. The battery inside the remote head shell had leaked just enough to corrode one of the contact pads, and the transponder signal was gone. Not weak. Gone.
I swapped in a new remote head key with a fresh PCF7936 chip, cut it to the door, and programmed it through the diagnostic port. Tested the transponder read, the remote lock and unlock, and the panic button. Then I walked her through the mechanical backup, turning the key with the transponder not reading, so she would know what that feels like if it ever happened again.
From her phone call to engine running was 44 minutes. She got her kid home, gave him his medicine, and had him in bed by eight. The dealer would have meant waiting until morning.
