2000 Hyundai Tiburon
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement key last on a 2000 Tiburon?

The programming itself doesn't degrade. Once it's in, it's in. Battery life on the remote side is what you'll notice first, and that's an easy fix when the time comes. The bigger wear factor on a key this age is the physical housing. These are over 25 years old at this point, and the OEM shells can get brittle.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call me. Every key I make is covered under warranty. That said, if a freshly programmed key stops being recognized, the issue is usually on the vehicle side, not the key itself. On a car this age, corroded contacts at the ignition, a weak battery in the vehicle, or an intermittent connection in the security system can all mimic a bad key. I troubleshoot the actual source rather than just handing you another key and hoping.

Q: Can I program a replacement remote head key for my 2000 Tiburon myself at home?

There are onboard relearn sequences that work on some older vehicles, and the 2000 Tiburon has been discussed on forums with owners attempting self-programming through ignition cycling. Results are inconsistent. Some owners report it working; others go through the steps multiple times and get nothing. The remote side and the transponder side are separate considerations too. Even if the remote buttons pair up, the transponder still needs to be properly enrolled for the car to start.

Q: My 2000 Tiburon key turns but the car won't start. Is this a key issue?

Not always. On a vehicle this age, a key that turns but doesn't start can point to the transponder not being read correctly, but it can also be something unrelated, like a worn ignition cylinder that's not fully engaging, or an unrelated electrical issue. The fact that it turns is actually useful information. It tells you the mechanical cut is still right.

2000 Hyundai Tiburon Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Saturday night in North Ventura. A couple walked out to their 2000 Tiburon after a good night out and the car just sat there. No response from the key fob, nothing. They assumed it was a dead fob battery and figured they'd deal with it in the morning, but the car wasn't going anywhere either way. One of them did a quick search and called me.

I was nearby. The remote head key on these is a single unit, so when something goes wrong you have to look at the whole assembly, not just one piece. I went through it on site, sorted out what they actually needed, and had the right blank already in the van. No waiting, no parts run, no leaving the car overnight in a lot.

They drove home that same night. The dealer option would have meant abandoning the car until Monday and paying considerably more for the privilege. When I'm already stocked for the vehicle you have, a late Saturday call gets handled exactly the same as any other appointment.

Hyundai Tiburon Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on older Hyundai vehicles like this one?▼

We use verified blanks that are confirmed to work with your specific vehicle, not whatever happens to be cheap and available. On a 2000 Tiburon, the remote head key is a combined unit, meaning the transponder and the remote circuitry are both in the same housing. A blank that looks right on the outside can still have the wrong internal specs and cause a failed program.
