Out in Juanamaria, I got a call just before 8am from a woman who works temp placements through a staffing agency. She was sitting in the agency parking lot in her 2004 Hyundai Tiburon, and her key had stopped working overnight. The remote side was dead, and when she tried to start the car, it turned over and died. She had a job site call at 8:30 and missing it meant losing the placement entirely.
I was there in about 20 minutes.
She had already tried everything she could think of: holding the button longer, turning it over a second time, even jiggling the key. That last one is a reflex people have, and it tells me nothing useful, but I let her finish before I started looking.
I got the door open mechanically, then connected to the OBD port and pulled up the immobilizer data. The key had lost its pairing, which happens on these when the battery in the key head runs down far enough that the transponder signal gets corrupted during a start attempt. Once that happens, the car stores the event and stops trusting that key.
I cut a replacement key to the lock, programmed the transponder side to pair it back to the immobilizer, and confirmed the remote buttons were responding before I handed it back. Total time on site was about 30 minutes.
She made the 8:30 call. The dealer, if she had gone that route, would have meant a tow, a same-day appointment she probably wasn't getting, and a bill that would have hurt. That is an afterthought, though. The part that mattered was the 30 minutes.
