2006 Hyundai Tiburon
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long should a replacement key last on a car this age?

The programming doesn't wear out. Once a key is enrolled with the vehicle it stays enrolled until something actively removes it, like an all-keys-lost reset or a module replacement. What does wear out is the physical side: the battery in the key head, the contacts inside the housing, and the plastic shell itself.

Q: What if the new key works at first and then stops a few weeks later?

Call me. The work is covered. But if a properly programmed key stops working on a vehicle this age, I want to look at the vehicle side too, not just hand you another key. Weak charging systems can drain key batteries faster than expected. Corroded battery terminals in the car affect how the immobilizer communicates. And on older Hyundais, a marginal receiver antenna can make the remote range drop off suddenly. It's rarely a bad programming job.

Q: I only have one key for my 2006 Tiburon. Is it harder to make a spare than to replace a lost key?

Yes, meaningfully so. When you have a working key, the process is faster and in many cases doesn't require the longer reset sequence that all-keys-lost jobs do. On a Hyundai from this era, adding a second key alongside an existing one is a much cleaner job than starting from scratch with no keys at all. All-keys-lost requires wiping the module's stored key memory and re-enrolling everything from zero, which adds time and sometimes additional steps.

Q: The remote on my Tiburon key stopped working but the car still starts fine. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. The remote and the transponder are separate functions inside the same unit. If the car starts, the transponder side is doing its job. Dead or weak battery in the key head is the first thing to check. If a fresh battery doesn't bring the remote back, the issue could be the contacts inside the housing, a cracked antenna loop in the key head, or the receiver on the vehicle side.

2006 Hyundai Tiburon Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone parked near Faria Beach, just off PCH in Ventura. Her Tiburon key had been getting flaky for a few weeks. It started with the lock button being unresponsive half the time, then the unlock stopped working reliably, and that morning the car took three tries to start. She wasn't sure if it was the key, the battery in the fob, or something deeper.

When I got there, I checked the basics first. The battery in the key head was weak enough to explain the remote issues, but the hard-start behavior pointed toward the transponder side of things. She only had the one key, which meant if I got this wrong she wasn't driving anywhere.

I had the right blank with me. Did the programming at her car, right there in the turnout with the ocean in the background. Got the transponder enrolled, verified the remote functions on both lock and unlock, tested the start three times. Solid every time.

She mentioned she'd called the dealer earlier in the week. They told her to bring it in, quoted her a wait and a cost that made her hesitate long enough to look for another option. I don't blame her for the hesitation. A mobile call-out for a 2006 in a beach parking lot, done in under an hour, is a better answer for a lot of people.

Hyundai Tiburon Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket key blanks on a 2006 Tiburon?▼

We use verified blanks that match the correct specifications for the 2006 Tiburon's remote head key, meaning the right blade profile, the right transponder chip, and the correct remote frequency. What you find on Amazon or eBay advertised as compatible is a real mixed bag. A fob that looks identical on the outside can have the wrong internals, and you won't find out until it fails to program or stops working two weeks later.
