Land Rover LR2 Key History
First Smart Key Rollout
The LR2 received smart key as an option on higher trims during this period. Base models continued with traditional keys while top trims got push-button start and proximity entry.
Legacy Platform
This legacy LR2 platform used a key system that Land Rover has since discontinued. Parts are still available and we carry compatible blanks, but the programming approach is unique to this generation.
Smart Key Introduction
Land Rover brought proximity smart key technology to the LR2, allowing keyless entry and push-button start. Drivers could keep the fob in their pocket and never physically insert a key.
Advanced Encryption Era
Current LR2 key systems use AES-class encryption with rolling codes and mutual authentication. Programming requires professional scan tools with real-time security server access.
Which Key Does Your LR2 Have?
A rectangular fob you keep in your pocket. The Land Rover LR2 detects it automatically - walk up, grab the handle, push the button to start. No inserting a key. This is the most common type on newer LR2 models.
Some Land Rover LR2 fobs include a dedicated remote start button (often marked with a circular arrow). Press twice to start the engine from outside the vehicle. Range is typically 100 to 200 feet.
Two pieces: a transponder key for starting and a separate small fob for remote lock/unlock. Common on LR2 models from the early 2000s before manufacturers combined everything into one unit.

Why Pay the Dealer for a LR2 Key?
At the Land Rover dealer, a LR2 key replacement starts with a 3 to 7 day appointment wait. We arrive same-day, usually within 25 minutes.
Common Land Rover LR2 Key Issues
LR2 Key Clone Scam Warning
Got a new key cut and programmed but the car ejects it from the slot. Usually no working original for on-board learning, or off timing during slot insertion. We carry the Autel IM508 to reset and retry; learned within a couple attempts most of the time.
LR2 Immobilizer Light Stays On
People assume a non-starting LR2 is dead fob electronics. Often the HU101 emergency blade inside the fob. These high-security blades wear fast, and a worn blade can cause the slot mechanism to reject the key. We cut fresh blades on a Xhorse Condor.
Rapid Battery Drain in LR2 Fob
Before programming a new key on a 2008-2012 LR2, we check stored DTCs. Crash input or module codes can block the immobilizer from accepting a new key. We clear codes, verify the system, then start key learning. Skipping this is the number one DIY fail reason.
Can You Program a LR2 Key Yourself?
Land Rover LR2: Land Rover requires PIN-based authorization for any key programming on this platform. The PIN is not in the owner's manual - it must be read from the vehicle's computer.
Land Rover LR2: This model uses encrypted smart key communication that requires server-authenticated programming. No DIY or on-board method exists.
Land Rover LR2: Smart key proximity programming requires a scan tool. There is no manual procedure for pairing a new smart key fob to this vehicle.
