Got a call from someone parked at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard. Their 2008 LR2 had one working smart key left, and the buttons had gone soft. Lock, unlock, nothing. The dash was throwing "SMART KEY BATTERY LOW" but a fresh CR2032 didn't fix it.
When I got there, I popped the NT1-TX9 fob open on the hood. The battery contacts looked fine, but the internal circuit board had some corrosion creeping along one trace near the button membrane. Old battery had leaked just enough to leave a film. Cleaned it with contact cleaner, let it dry, seated a new CR2032 properly, and snapped it back together.
Buttons came back. Passive entry worked from the driver handle and the passenger side. Trunk release, good. Start button, good.
Then we talked about the second key, the dead one they'd tossed in a drawer months ago. Same issue, worse shape. I cleaned that board too, put a fresh battery in, and re-registered both fobs through the OBD port to the KVM so the system recognized two active keys again.
The whole thing took about 25 minutes. They sat on a bench near the entrance and watched most of it happen from there. Two working smart keys, both tested at the car, no trip to the dealer, no parts on backorder. Just a parking lot fix in Oxnard on a Tuesday afternoon.
