I got a call from someone over in El Rio in Oxnard. She had one key for her 2010 LR2, and it had been acting up for weeks. Short range, intermittent lock response, and the car occasionally throwing up a key warning on the dash when she was sitting right there holding the fob. She figured it was the battery and kept swapping in fresh CR2032s. Didn't help.
When I pulled up, she handed me the fob and I could already feel it. The battery door had been pried open at some point and the internal battery contact had a slight outward bow. The CR2032 was making contact, but not consistent contact. Every bump in the road was enough to break it for a split second, which explained why the warning came and went.
I straightened the contact, seated a new CR2032 correctly, and then did the resync procedure. Walked every door, tested the lock and unlock at range, checked the key warning was gone at startup. Everything came back clean.
She mentioned she had called the dealer first. They told her to bring the car in, said they might need to order a new fob, and couldn't give her a timeline. That was going to be tow, wait, and whatever parts and labor they decided it needed. She hadn't gone that route yet, which was lucky, because she didn't need any of it. Just a ten-minute fix in her driveway and she was done. Saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer would have run her through.
