2013 Land Rover LR2 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from over in Fremont North neighborhood in Oxnard. Guy with a 2013 LR2 said the dash was showing "SMART KEY NOT DETECTED" and the start button wouldn't do anything. He'd already swapped in a fresh CR2032 twice, thinking he got a bad battery the first time.
When I pulled up, he had the fob sitting on the center console. I cracked it open right there. The battery was fine, but the contact spring on the negative side had flattened out just enough to lose solid connection. The KOBJTF10A shell is easy to pop open but also easy to damage if you pry the wrong spot. That spring gets bent, and the new battery reads dead to the fob even though it tests at 3.2 volts on a meter.
Bent the contact back, cleaned both terminals, seated the CR2032 properly, and snapped the housing shut. Walked the full test: unlock from ten feet, lock from ten feet, panic, tailgate release, all five buttons. Then engine start. Dash cleared, no warning.
He told me he'd already called the Land Rover dealer in Thousand Oaks and they quoted him an appointment two weeks out just for a diagnosis. He wasn't even sure if they'd have a replacement fob in stock since JLR ships those from the UK warehouse.
He didn't need a new key at all. Just needed someone who opens these every week and knows where they break.
