Out in the East Ventura neighborhood on a Sunday, a guy flagged me down in a temple parking lot. He had a 2008 Nissan Versa SL that another locksmith had already touched. Charged him full price for a new key, left, and the car would crank for about two seconds before the immobilizer killed fuel injection. The other tech told him it was a module problem.

It was not a module problem. It was an incomplete IMMO registration.

Nissan's NATS system on these B16-platform Versas requires a timed security handshake through the BCM. If you rush it or interrupt the countdown, the key data writes temporarily but never commits to permanent memory. The car sees the transponder, lets the starter spin, then cuts fuel because the BCM never actually accepted the key.

I used my NSN14 Lishi to verify the mechanical cut was good, then connected through OBD with my IM608. Cleared the half-written key data, ran a clean NATS learn with the full security timer, and waited it out. His KR55WK48903 fob came back with all four buttons responding, push-button start with no fuel cutoff, and a solid confirmation on my screen showing permanent registration.

He had already paid the first guy, and I could not undo that. But I could make sure this time the job was actually done. He watched the whole thing from the hood and kept checking the dash like he expected it to quit again. It did not.
