1st Generation (P16)
Nissan built the Kicks on the V-platform with a solid security setup from day one. Your key is a smart proximity fob with an ID46 transponder chip, two buttons, a CR2032 battery, and a hidden mechanical blade tucked inside. The NATS immobilizer talks to that chip every time you press the start button, and we program it through the OBD-II port right in your driveway.
2nd Generation (P17)
Nissan stepped things up here with the new CMF-B platform and a completely overhauled security system. The 2025 Kicks uses an ID47B6 or ID51 chip, three buttons on the fob, and NATS Enhanced immobilizer that requires server authentication for programming. That means the vehicle has to phone home to Nissan's servers before it accepts a new key, which adds complexity but also makes it significantly harder to steal.
Which Key Does Your Kicks Use?
This is a proximity fob. You keep it in your pocket, walk up to the car, and it unlocks. Press the start button and you are driving. There is a small metal key hidden inside for emergencies.
Same proximity concept as the earlier Kicks, but with an extra button and upgraded security. The 2025 fob looks similar but runs on a completely different encryption system under the hood.

Transponder Key Failure
The ID46 chip in your 2018-2024 Kicks fob degrades over time, especially after drops or moisture. Weak chip equals NATS no-read, no start. We see this in Oxnard and Camarillo and fix it with a new smart key, programmed and tested on the spot.
Smart Key Battery Drain
Your Kicks fob constantly pings the car with a low-power signal even on your counter. In Ventura County heat the CR2032 drains fast. Range dropping? Swap the battery first: small flathead, fresh CR2032 positive side up.
Ignition Switch Malfunction
People blame the fob when their 2020-2024 Kicks won't start; sometimes it is push-button start failing to detect even with a fresh battery. Nissan TSB NTB19-090 covers 2018-2020 signal interference. We check fob signal and antenna connections first.
NATS Light Flashing

Can You Program a Nissan Kicks Key Yourself?
No DIY programming option exists for the Nissan Kicks. The NATS system requires professional tools and a PIN code to register a new key. We handle this on-site with our equipment.
The 2025 Kicks requires Nissan server authentication for key programming. There is no self-programming procedure available. This one needs professional equipment with server access.
