2023 Nissan Kicks
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how is it different from a regular key?

The smart fob on your 2023 Kicks does a few things at once. It has a physical blade folded inside that you can use to manually lock and unlock the door if the electronics fail. It has a transponder chip that talks to the immobilizer every time the car is asked to start. And it has four buttons for remote functions.

Q: My Nissan is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I do first?

Start with the CR2032. That battery is the most common reason this warning appears on the 2023 Kicks, and it can fail faster than you'd expect, sometimes under two years depending on how often the fob is used. Pop it open, seat a fresh battery cleanly against the contacts, and retest. If the warning persists with a new battery, try holding the fob body directly against the start button while pressing the brake.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I just program it myself?

Not on the 2023 Kicks. There is no button sequence or ignition-turn trick that registers a new smart fob on this vehicle. Programming requires a diagnostic tool that talks to the immobilizer through the OBD port. If you already bought a fob online with the correct factory ID, that's fine, the fob can still be used. You just need someone with the right equipment to pair it. Bring the fob when you call and we can handle it on site.

Q: How many keys can the 2023 Kicks hold in memory, and what happens if I lose all of them?

The system can hold multiple fobs in memory, enough for a household with a spare. What matters is what happens when all of them are gone. All-keys-lost on a smart key Nissan is a more involved job than adding a spare when you still have a working fob. When there are no registered keys left, the immobilizer has to be reset through the diagnostic port before any new fob can be enrolled.

2023 Nissan Kicks Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Old Town Goleta. Parking lot off Hollister, afternoon.

A woman had already done the right thing before she called me. She pulled up my BSIS license number, confirmed the insurance was current, and checked that EZ Car Keyz had a real address and a working phone number attached to it. She told me all this when I pulled up in the van. Said her last locksmith handed her a receipt with a disconnected number on it and no license anywhere. She was not doing that again, especially now. She was expecting, tired, and just needed a spare fob for her 2023 Nissan Kicks.

I appreciate when someone does that homework. It means they understand what they're paying for, and it keeps the conversation honest from the start.

I got the new fob paired through the diagnostic port, confirmed the immobilizer recognized it, and walked her through all four buttons in the lot so she could see it working before I packed up. The whole job took under an hour, done at her car, no tow, no waiting room.

The dealer had quoted her a number that made her wince. What she paid me was a fraction of that. Real receipt, real company name, real license number, real van with the name on the door.

Nissan Kicks Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?▼

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard mobile job. The tools used go in alongside the broken piece without forcing the cylinder, and on most Nissan ignitions we can get it out clean. The part worth knowing: once a key snaps off inside, the internal wafers sometimes get nicked or shifted by the break. The piece can come out fine and the cylinder can still be damaged enough that it needs replacement soon after. We check for that on site.
