Down at Goleta Beach Park, a Kicks owner was ready to throw her fob in the ocean. "No Key Detected" every third start, doors wouldn't lock half the time, and she'd already changed the battery twice.
I pulled up near the volleyball courts. She had the 285E3-5MR3B fob, same one I'd seen fail on three other Kicks that week. Plugged in my scanner and there it was: DTC B2614 stored in the BCM. Classic symptom of TSB NTB22-055.
First things first: updated the BCM software. Takes about eight minutes with the engine off. Then programmed a fresh fob as her backup since the original's board was showing signs of water intrusion near the battery compartment. Tiny bit of corrosion on the contact pad.
She asked how much the dealer wanted for this. I told her they quoted someone last week over four hundred for a single fob, plus whatever they'd charge to diagnose and update the BCM. She just nodded and said "yeah, that sounds about right."
Both fobs working perfect now. Original cleaned up and resealed, new one programmed and tested. Saved her a good chunk compared to that dealer route.
