A guy living near the Isla Vista side of Goleta reached out after a key replacement he'd gotten from another locksmith started acting up about a week in. His 2021 Kicks would start fine in the morning, then by the time his night shift ended, push-to-start would throw a key-not-detected warning and just sit there. He thought something was wrong with the car itself. Electrical gremlin. Maybe the battery. He was already pricing out diagnostics at a shop.

When I got there, I connected to the OBD port and pulled the fob data. The previous programming job had gone through initial registration, but the pairing wasn't solid. On top of that, the CR2032 in the fob was reading low, which made detection intermittent depending on distance and whether the car had been sitting in the heat. Those two things together made it look like a random electrical fault when it was really just a bad key job compounded by a weak battery.
I cleared the old key data, registered a new fob correctly this time, and put a fresh CR2032 in it. Then I walked every function: door handle touch unlock on both sides, lock, unlock, and the push-to-start handshake. Everything clean.
He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him it would have been a lot more, and they would have wanted the car towed in first. He just nodded. He had work in a few hours and needed the thing running, not sitting in a service queue.
