Out near Lake Los Carneros, a guy flagged me down in the parking area while his Kicks sat running. He'd managed to get it started but didn't trust the fob. Said it had been throwing a key-not-detected warning on and off for a week, then that morning the driver's door handle touch-unlock stopped responding entirely. He'd already ordered a replacement fob online and wanted me to program it.
I asked him to hand me both fobs, the original and the one he'd bought. The original felt light. Popped it open right there on the hood of my van and the CR2032 inside looked original to the car. No corrosion, but it was sitting cocked just enough that one contact had almost no pressure on it. Classic intermittent.
I seated the battery correctly, cleaned both contact points, and closed the fob back up. Touch-unlock on the driver's door came back immediately. Ran through all four buttons, walked out to test range, did three cold starts. Everything was solid.
He still wanted the second fob programmed as a spare, which made sense. That part did require my diagnostic tool connected at the OBD port to register it to the vehicle's security system. The whole job, battery seat fix plus programming the spare, took about forty minutes. He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait of several days just to get an appointment, and the quote didn't include what he'd already spent on the fob he ordered online.
The original fob was fine the whole time. Sometimes the smallest thing is the actual problem.
