2020 Nissan Kicks
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does the 2020 Kicks use it?

The fob for your Kicks is a 4-button Intelligent Key. It handles passive entry, meaning the car detects the fob when you are close to the door, so you do not press unlock to get in. The push-button start also reads the fob from inside the cabin before it allows the engine to run. Inside the fob there is also an emergency metal blade.

Q: My Nissan says key not detected. What do I do?

Start with the fob battery. The CR2032 in these fobs can run down faster than you expect, and a low battery is the most common reason the 2020 Kicks throws a key-not-detected warning. If you already swapped the battery and are still seeing it, try this: hold the fob flat against the start button and press the brake at the same time.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2020 Kicks does not have a self-programming sequence you can run from the driver seat. Registering a new fob to this vehicle requires a diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port. The fob you bought online is the right starting point, but it is just a shell until it gets paired to your specific car. Bring the fob and the vehicle together, and I can handle the registration on site.

Q: I only have one key left for my Kicks. Should I get a spare before something happens?

Yes, and the reason is specific to how this system works. If you lose your only fob, the job becomes an all-keys-lost procedure. That means the existing key registration has to be wiped and one or more new fobs have to be enrolled from scratch. It takes longer, costs more, and if you are stuck somewhere in Downtown Ojai with no working key at all, your options get limited fast.

2020 Nissan Kicks Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked near the Arcade in Downtown Ojai when I got the call. A woman had her 2020 Kicks sitting in a lot off Ojai Avenue and the car was refusing to acknowledge her fob. She had already swapped the battery herself, which was the right first move. Still got the key-not-detected warning every time she walked up to the door.

When I got there she handed me the fob and I could tell from the housing that it had been opened more than once. The battery was the right type, but the contact on the negative side had been bent slightly outward, probably from prying the case open with something too thick. The fob was sending a signal, but the car was reading it as intermittent and not reliable enough to unlock.

I straightened the contact, seated a fresh CR2032 correctly, and closed the housing clean. First walk-up, the door unlocked. She stared at it for a second like she was waiting for it to change its mind.

Then I ran the full check: all four buttons, push-button start from the driver seat, and a walk-around to confirm the passive entry was picking her up on both doors. Everything was working.

She asked what the dealer would have charged to look at it. I told her the dealer route usually starts with a diagnostic fee just to confirm the fob is the issue, then a replacement key on top of that. She had spent maybe three minutes telling me the backstory. The actual fix took less time than that.

Nissan Kicks Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?▼

The 2020 Kicks is push-button start, so there is no ignition cylinder for a key to break inside. If you are driving this vehicle, the fob stays in your pocket or bag. The only physical key on the Kicks setup is the emergency insert blade stored inside the fob itself, and that one only goes into the door lock cylinder on the driver door, not the ignition.
