Yes. A licensed automotive locksmith with a professional programmer can pair a new or replacement key fob to most cars where they are parked, usually in 15 to 30 minutes. We connect to the diagnostic port, pull any security code the car asks for through NASTF registry access, and test every button. The exception is Mercedes-Benz: we refer Mercedes keys and fobs to the dealer.
- Most makes and models can have a fob programmed by a mobile locksmith at the car, with no tow and no dealer appointment.
- Bring every fob you own, because on many vehicles a programming session erases any fob that is not present.
- Fobs bought online can be programmed when the FCC ID and frequency match the car, and we tell you before any charge if one will not work.
- Mercedes-Benz keys, fobs and all-keys-lost go to the dealer; we still handle Mercedes lockouts and broken key extraction.
- Pricing is a flat rate quoted by phone or text before we drive out, and it covers the programming and the trip.

Can a locksmith program a key fob, or only the dealer?
Yes. Fob programming is not a dealer-only job. A licensed automotive locksmith with professional programming equipment and access to manufacturer security data can pair a fob to most vehicles, right where the car is parked.
Programming means teaching the car to recognize a specific fob. The car keeps a short list of fobs it trusts, and programming adds a fob to that list. Until a fob is on the list, its buttons do nothing, and on a push-to-start car the engine will not start.
The dealer does this through the car's diagnostic port with a factory tool. On most cars we do the same job through the same port with the Autel IM508 and the AutoProPad, plus NASTF registry access for the security codes many cars ask for. What matters to the car is whether the tool supports that model and has the right security data, not whose name is on the tool.
How fob programming works, step by step
Most fob programming takes 15 to 30 minutes at the car. The work usually runs through the diagnostic port under the dashboard, which is why the car has to be there.
- 1Confirm the fob matches
Before anything is plugged in, we check that the fob is the right type for the car: the FCC ID, the frequency, the button layout and, for keys that start the engine, the chip. A fob that does not match will never pair, whoever holds the tool.
- 2Verify ownership
We check photo ID against the registration, or the title with matching ID, or a notarized authorization from the registered owner. California locksmith licensing requires it on every job.
- 3Connect and pull security data
The programmer plugs into the diagnostic port. Many cars want a security code or PIN before they will accept a new fob, and our NASTF registry access lets us request the codes manufacturers release only to vetted professionals.
- 4Register every fob in one session
The car goes into learn mode and each fob is added. We program all of your fobs together so none of them drop off the list.
- 5Cut the blade if there is one
Flip keys and smart keys with an emergency blade need the metal cut to your locks. We cut it in the van on the Xhorse Condor or Xhorse Dolphin.
- 6Test every function
Lock, unlock, trunk, panic, remote start if the car has it, and a real engine start. A fob is not finished until the car starts with it.
Remote buttons and engine start are often two separate jobs. On many vehicles the lock and unlock buttons talk to one module, while the chip that lets the engine run talks to the immobilizer. A fob that locks the doors but will not start the car usually has only half its programming done, or the wrong chip inside.
What a locksmith needs from you before programming a fob
Have the car, every fob you own, your ID and registration, and the year, make and model ready. With those in hand, most fob jobs finish in a single visit.
- The car, parked anywhere we can reach it: a driveway, a work lot, a parking structure, a campus or the roadside.
- Every fob and key you have for the car, working or not.
- Photo ID that matches the registration, or the title with matching ID, or a notarized authorization from the registered owner.
- The year, make and model when you call, plus the VIN if it is handy. It is on the registration and on a plate at the base of the windshield on the driver side.
- If you bought the fob yourself, a photo of its back or the listing, so we can check the FCC ID in advance.
Bring every fob, even the one in the drawer. On many vehicles a programming session clears the car's fob list and saves only the fobs that are present. A spare left behind may stop working afterward.
The ownership check is not optional. California locksmith licensing requires it, and we do not skip it under pressure. If the car is not in your name, the registered owner can sign a notarized authorization ahead of time.
How much does it cost to have a locksmith program a key fob?
It depends on whether you already have the fob and how many fobs the car needs. Every job is a flat rate quoted by phone or text before we drive out, and the quote includes the trip.

Will a locksmith program a fob you bought online?
Yes, when the fob matches the car. We program customer-supplied fobs when the FCC ID and frequency match the vehicle, and we check before we start so you know before any charge if it will not work.
The FCC ID is printed on the back of most fobs or inside the case, and it should match the one on your original. The frequency has to match too, because a fob built for a different band cannot talk to the car. For keys that start the engine, the chip type has to match as well.
Used fobs are the risky category. Many fobs lock to the first car they are programmed to, and a locked fob may refuse a second car. New, unprogrammed fobs avoid that problem. Our guide to fobs bought online covers what to check before you order.
What we do not program, and where we send you instead
Mercedes-Benz keys and fobs go to the dealer. We refer new Mercedes keys, all-keys-lost and any Mercedes fob, including one you bought yourself, to the dealer. We still handle Mercedes lockouts and broken key extraction.
Our Mercedes-Benz pages for Ventura County and San Diego explain what we still do for Mercedes owners, and our Mercedes-Benz key guide covers what to expect at the dealer.
A few other situations change the job rather than stop it. When every key is lost on some older or locked-down systems, the diagnostic port is not enough, and the work moves to reading the immobilizer's memory chip directly, called EEPROM programming. It takes longer and costs more, and we quote it before we come. Our EEPROM guide explains when that applies.
A fob with a cracked circuit board, or a used fob locked to another car, may not be programmable at all. When that happens, we tell you at the car and quote a fob we supply instead.
Dealer or mobile locksmith: which is better for fob programming?
For most cars, a mobile locksmith is faster and costs less, because we come to the car and there is no tow or service appointment. The dealer makes sense for Mercedes-Benz, and when a fob problem is covered under a warranty you want to use.
With a dealer, the car usually has to get to the service department, which can mean a tow when no key works. With us, the van drives to the car. We usually come the same day, and typical arrival in our primary service areas is under 30 minutes.
We serve Ventura County, Santa Barbara County, San Diego County and Malibu, 6:00 AM to 11:30 PM, 7 days a week, from Santa Barbara to Chula Vista. We hold California BSIS license LCO#6792, which you can look up before we arrive, and we are NASTF VSP certified and insured.
