If you lost your only push-to-start key fob, the car can usually be recovered where it is parked, with no tow. A licensed mobile locksmith opens it without damage if needed, programs a new proximity fob to the car and cuts its emergency blade, typically in 45 to 60 minutes on site. Have photo ID that matches the registration ready.
- Losing your only smart key is an all-keys-lost job, and for most makes it is still done at the car with no tow.
- We need photo ID matching the registration, the title with matching ID, or notarized authorization from the registered owner.
- Most all-keys-lost smart key jobs take 45 to 60 minutes on site, including cutting the emergency blade.
- On most systems the lost fob can be erased from the car's memory so it will no longer start the car.
- Add a second fob during the same visit so you are never back at zero.

What to do first when your only smart key is gone
Search the places a fob hides, check whether it is locked inside the car, then call. Do not book a tow or a dealer appointment until you have a locksmith's quote.
- Look through the windows at the seats, console, cupholders and door pockets. A fob locked inside the car is a lockout, which is quicker and costs less than replacing the fob.
- Check bags, jacket pockets and the last few places you stopped. Because a smart key never has to leave your pocket, it is easy to lose track of where you last had it.
- If you set up a phone key or a manufacturer app, try it. On cars that support a phone key it may get you driving, while many apps can only lock, unlock or locate the car.
- If the fob disappeared with a bag or a wallet, treat it as stolen and tell us when you call.
- Gather your photo ID and the registration or title before we arrive.
Then call or text us from the car with the year, make, model and exact location. We quote a flat rate before we dispatch, and that quote is the price you pay.
Why a lost smart key is different from a lost regular key
With no working fob, the car has nothing to vouch for a new one, so the job becomes all-keys-lost programming instead of simply adding a key. Most smart keys also do two jobs: a short-range proximity signal for entry and starting, and a hidden metal emergency blade for the driver's door.
Antennas in the car look for the fob when you touch a door handle or press the start button. If the car does not recognize the fob, nothing happens. That is why a new fob, even the correct one, does nothing until it is programmed to your car.
Some systems need security data such as an immobilizer PIN, which our NASTF Vehicle Security Professional registry access lets us retrieve. A few vehicles need EEPROM work on a module, which takes longer.
What we need from you to replace a lost push-to-start fob
Proof of ownership and the vehicle details. California locksmith licensing requires ownership verification, and we do it on every job, no exceptions.
- Photo ID that matches the name on the vehicle registration
- Or the title, with photo ID that matches it
- Or notarized authorization from the registered owner when the car is in someone else's name
Tell us the year, make and model, and read us the VIN if you can. It is on the registration, on most insurance cards, and on a plate at the base of the windshield on the driver's side. Let us know whether the car is locked and exactly where it is parked, down to the level and space in a parking structure.
How we program a new smart key at the car
We verify ownership, open the car if needed, program the fob and cut its blade, all where the car is parked. Most jobs finish in a single visit.
- 1Check ownership
We match your ID to the registration or title before any work starts.
- 2Open the car without damage
If it is locked, we get in with no drilling and no broken glass.
- 3Program the new fob
We connect an Autel IM508 or AutoProPad programmer to the diagnostic port and register the new fob. Where the system allows it, we erase the missing fob from the car's memory at the same time.
- 4Cut the emergency blade
The blade inside the new fob is cut on our Xhorse Condor or Xhorse Dolphin so it opens the driver's door if the fob battery ever dies.
- 5Try every function
Before the technician leaves, check proximity unlock, push-button start, remote lock and unlock, and trunk release with the new fob.
Erasing the missing fob stops it from starting the car, but its metal blade can still turn the door lock. If the fob was stolen by someone who may know where the car is parked, tell us so we can talk through your options.
While the car is connected, adding a second fob is worth it. A multi-fob setup during the same visit means the next lost fob is a simpler replacement instead of another all-keys-lost job.
How long it takes to replace a lost push-to-start key
Most all-keys-lost smart key jobs take 45 to 60 minutes at the car. Same-day service is our default, with typical arrival under 30 minutes in our primary service areas.
Vehicles that need EEPROM recovery can take 90 to 120 minutes. If you still had one working fob, a replacement would take about 30 to 45 minutes, which is one more reason to keep a spare.
Delays usually come from paperwork or access rather than the fob itself: an ID that does not match the registration, or a car parked where we cannot reach the driver's door. See how long car key replacement takes for the full list.
We work 6:00 AM to 11:30 PM, 7 days a week, in Ventura County, Santa Barbara County, San Diego County and Malibu, including Thousand Oaks and Oceanside.
