In most cases a mobile locksmith can make a new motorcycle key at the bike, with no trailer and no dealer trip. A plain mechanical key is cut to match the locks. A bike with an immobilizer also needs the chip in the new key programmed to the bike. On many bikes, one key runs the ignition, gas cap and seat lock.
- Plain motorcycle keys are cut to match the locks; immobilizer keys also need a chip programmed to the bike before the engine will run.
- On many bikes one key works the ignition, gas cap, seat and storage locks, so a new key should be tested in every one of them.
- Many Harley-Davidson models rely on a security fob as well as a key, so tell us exactly what came with the bike.
- Copying a working key is usually a shorter, simpler job than making one with every key lost, especially on a bike with an immobilizer.
- We come to the bike in Ventura County, Santa Barbara County, San Diego County and Malibu, and verify ownership on every job.
Can a locksmith make a new motorcycle key at the bike?
Yes, on most bikes. We cut and, where needed, program motorcycle keys wherever the bike is parked, so there is no trailer, no tow and no wait for a dealer appointment.
Motorcycle keys are smaller and more varied than car keys, and most manufacturers use their own blank profiles. The van carries the same Xhorse Condor and Xhorse Dolphin cutting machines and Autel IM508 and AutoProPad programmers we use on cars. You can read more on our motorcycle key replacement service page, or the San Diego version.
What decides the job is whether you still have a working key. Copying a key you have is the short job. If every key is gone, the new key has to be made from the bike itself, which takes longer and can cost more. Either way, most jobs finish in a single visit.
Plain mechanical motorcycle keys
Many older bikes, and some current ones, use a key with no chip. For those, the job is cutting a blank to match the locks, and the bike starts as soon as the key turns.
When a key code is available, sometimes on a tag that came with the original keys, the new key can be cut to code. When it is not, a locksmith can work out the cuts from the lock itself. A key cut to the lock's original specification avoids a common problem: a copy made from a worn key copies the wear, and worn keys tend to fail at the worst moment.
A motorcycle ignition also lives outside, in sun, rain and road grit. Ignition wafers wear over time, which is why a key that only turns sometimes tends to stop turning altogether later. If yours has started to stick, it is worth dealing with before it leaves you stranded.

Motorcycles with immobilizer chip keys
If your bike has an immobilizer, the key carries a chip the bike must recognize before the engine will run. A blade that is cut perfectly but has no programmed chip may turn the ignition, and the bike still will not start.
Immobilizers are common on many newer bikes, from touring models to sport bikes. If you are not sure whether yours has one, check the owner's manual, or give us the year, make and model and we will tell you. A thick plastic head on the key is a hint, but not proof.
The work happens at the bike. We cut the blade, program the chip so the bike recognizes it, then test the key in the ignition before we leave. If you still have one working key, adding a second is usually simpler than starting from nothing.
Gas cap, seat and storage locks
On many motorcycles, one key runs the ignition, the gas cap, the seat lock and any storage or helmet lock. A replacement key should be tested in every one of them before we leave, not just the ignition.
The seat lock often covers the battery, the tool kit and sometimes the registration, and a locked gas cap means no fuel. If a new key starts the bike but will not open the tank, you find out at the pump.
Bikes do not always stay matched. If a previous owner replaced the ignition or a gas cap, you can end up with two or three different keys for one bike. Tell us when you call if you know of a replaced lock, or if your current key fits some locks and not others, and we will plan for each lock before we arrive.
Saddlebags and side cases have their own locks too. If your keys are locked inside a bag or under the seat, that is a lockout, and we open it without prying, because chrome, paint and leather show every mark.
Harley-Davidson and sport bike keys
Many Harley-Davidson models use a security fob alongside or instead of a traditional ignition key, and many Japanese and European sport bikes use immobilizer chip keys.
Harley-Davidson
On many Harleys with factory security, the system expects the fob to be nearby, and a missing or dead fob can keep the bike from starting even with a working key. Try a fresh battery in the fob first if you have one. Some models have an override procedure in the owner's manual; if that does not get you going, we can pair a replacement fob or cut a new key at the bike.
Our Harley-Davidson pages cover this in more detail for Ventura County and San Diego.
Sport bikes and imports
Immobilizer systems on sport bikes vary a lot from brand to brand, which is why we ask for the exact year, make and model before we drive out. That way the right blank and equipment are in the van. If your bike needs something we cannot do at the bike, we tell you on the phone before we dispatch.

What to have ready before you call
The year, make and model, what keys or fobs still exist, where the bike is, and your proof of ownership. With that, we can quote a flat price before we dispatch.
- 1Year, make and model
This tells us the blank, whether there is an immobilizer, and what equipment to bring.
- 2What you still have
A working key, a broken key, a fob with no key, or nothing at all. Each one changes the job and the price.
- 3Where the bike is
Driveway, parking structure, campus lot, roadside or tow yard. We come to it, and the bike does not need to move.
- 4Proof of ownership
Photo ID matching the registration, the title with matching ID, or a notarized authorization from the registered owner. If the registration is under a locked seat, tell us when you call.
Ownership verification is required under California locksmith licensing, and it applies to bikes exactly as it does to cars. Our guide on whether you need the title to get a key made covers the paperwork in detail.
We work across Ventura County, Santa Barbara County, San Diego County and Malibu, 6:00 AM to 11:30 PM, 7 days a week. Start at our motorcycle locksmith pages for Ventura County or San Diego, or call or text us with the bike details.
