Launch Year Transponder
You turn this key in the ignition like any other key, but there is an ID46 transponder chip embedded inside the blade that talks to Honda's immobilizer every time you start the car. No buttons, no remote, no battery. Just a chipped metal key that has to match your ECU or the engine will not fire. Programming is done on-board, which keeps things straightforward for us.
CVT Era, Same Key
Honda added the CVT transmission option in 2001, but the key system stayed identical. Still an ID46 transponder chip, still a plain metal key with no remote buttons, still on-board programming. If you have a 2001, 2002, or 2003 Insight, your key looks and works exactly like the 2000 model.
Remote Head Key Arrives
This is where things changed. Honda upgraded to a remote head key with three buttons: lock, unlock, and trunk. The ID46 transponder chip is still inside, but now you also have a CR2032 battery powering the remote functions. Programming moved to OBD-II, which means we plug into your car's diagnostic port and use a PIN code to sync the new key to your immobilizer.

Ignition Cylinder Wear
Key slides in loose, or you have to jiggle it to turn over? High-mileage Insights are notorious for worn ignition cylinders, especially with a heavy keychain. We diagnose on-site in Oxnard or Simi Valley and repair or replace the cylinder without a tow.
IMA Battery Failure Mimicking Immobilizer Fault
Owners assume the immobilizer is locking them out when the real culprit is a dying NiMH IMA pack. The system throws check engine lights and weird no-start behavior that looks exactly like a key problem. We check the immobilizer first.
Transponder Chip Wear
The ID46 chip in your Insight key can weaken after years of use, especially on 2003-2006 models with thousands of ignition cycles. The immobilizer cannot read the chip and the engine will not start. We clone or replace the chip on the spot.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
Dead remote buttons on a 2004-2006 Insight? Check the CR2032 first. Fobs drain fast if buttons get pressed in a pocket or bag. Fresh battery usually fixes it in two minutes. Buttons feel mushy after? The rubber contact pad may need replacing; we carry those.
Can You Program an Insight Key Yourself?
You can pair the lock, unlock, and trunk buttons yourself using an ignition cycling procedure. This only programs the remote functions. It does not program the transponder chip, so the car still will not start with an unprogrammed key.
The ID46 transponder chip requires professional locksmith tools to program. There is no DIY procedure for the immobilizer on any 2000-2006 Insight. You need someone with OBD-II programming capability and Honda PIN access.
