2005 Honda Insight Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy over in La Colonia picked up a 2005 Insight from a private seller. One of those deals that looked clean on paper, decent shape, ran well, priced right. Except it came with one key.
He did what most people do. Called the Honda dealer first. They quoted him a price that made him pause, something that felt steep for a 20-year-old economy car. He found me online and called to ask if that was normal.
I told him dealer pricing on older Honda transponder keys tends to run high even when the job itself is pretty simple. I could meet him at his place in La Colonia, cut the blank to his vehicle, and get the second key registered while his original was still in hand. The add-a-key process on this generation of Honda security system does not require the same level of work as an all-keys-lost job, so the timing was in his favor.
I showed up with a blank that fit the Insight, cut it to spec off his working key, and ran the transponder enrollment. Tested it in the door lock, tested it in the ignition, watched it turn over clean. He now has two working keys.
The thing I kept thinking about was how close he was to just not bothering. People buy older cars and accept the single-key risk because spares feel like a luxury. They are not. On a transponder system, one key is one bad day away from a tow and a harder job.
