A college senior near the Del Sol shopping area in Oxnard called the dealer before he called me. They quoted him a big number and told him to tow the car in. His only key had hit concrete and cracked the transponder housing wide open. He could see the little glass chip rattling around loose inside the plastic. He figured that was just what Honda keys cost now.

Drove out to his apartment carport and used my HON66 Lishi to pick the door and decode the cuts right off the wafer lock cylinder. The 2004 Insight uses a standard Honda HON66 keyway, so the decode was clean. Pulled the bitting, cut a fresh blade on site, then seated a new ID13 chip in the key head.
Programming on these early Insights goes through OBD-II. The immobilizer handshake on this generation is pretty quick once the tool talks to the ECU. Total time from showing up to handing him a working key was around 40 minutes.
Before I left, I showed him the cracked housing on his old key so he'd know what that kind of damage looks like early. A hairline crack near the bow is how most of these fail. He never had to leave his apartment and paid a fraction of what the dealer wanted.
