How Honda Fit Keys Changed Over the Years
1st Gen (GD3)
A remote head key with an ID46 transponder chip and a standard cut blade. Three buttons, CR1616 battery, and on-board programming that keeps things simple. Honda actually used the same key blank as the S2000 sports car for this generation, which is a fun little detail.
1st Gen Facelift (GE6/GE8)
A flip key replaced the old remote head style, and Honda upgraded the chip to an ID46 with 80-bit encryption. Still three buttons and a CR1616 battery, but now programming requires OBD-II tools plugged into the diagnostic port under your dash. No more simple on-board procedure for this one.
2nd Gen (GE/GG)
A remote head key running an ID46 chip, similar security to the facelift but in a different body style. Three buttons, CR2032 battery, and OBD-II programming required. Some of these overlap with the facelift generation, so your VIN is the best way to confirm which key system you actually have.
3rd Gen (GK)
A smart proximity key with ID46 and rolling code encryption, four buttons, and push-button start on higher trims like the EX. The blade is high-security cut, the battery is a CR2032, and there is zero self-programming available. This one needs professional OBD-II tools, period.
Which Key Does Your Honda Fit Use?
A traditional metal key with the remote buttons built into the head. You turn it in the ignition to start your Fit.
The blade folds into the fob body when you are not using it. Press the button on the side and the key flips out.
Looks similar to the 2007-2008 key but uses a different chip inside. Your VIN tells us exactly which one you need.
Keep it in your pocket and press the button on the door handle to unlock. Push the start button to fire up the engine. The emergency blade inside is high-security cut.

Common Honda Fit Key Problems
Immobilizer Sync Failure
Swapped the fob battery, now your Fit cranks but will not start? Transponder chip lost sync with the ECU. Happens on every Fit generation 2007-2020. We reprogram through OBD-II, usually under 30 minutes.
Incorrect Frequency Mismatch
The 2015-2020 Fit uses a specific frequency. A replacement fob at the wrong frequency (433 MHz vs 314 MHz) means lock and unlock do nothing. We verify by VIN before cutting a key, so this never happens on our watch.
Self-Programming Lockout
Simi Valley customer calling about a dead new key: did you try to program it yourself? On 2012+ Fits, the on-board procedure can brick the key. ECU rejects it and locks out further attempts. We use professional Honda tools to clear the lockout.
Blade Wear on H78/H79
Hard to insert or turn the key? Nine times out of ten it is the blade, not the ignition. H78 and H79 blanks on 2007-2014 Fits wear from daily use until the cuts stop engaging the wafers. We cut a fresh blade to factory spec and the ignition feels new.
Can You Program a Honda Fit Key Yourself?
You can pair the remote buttons yourself using an ignition cycle procedure. But the ID42 transponder chip still needs professional programming to actually start the car.
Same deal here. The remote lock and unlock buttons can be paired at home with a specific ignition sequence. The ID46 transponder chip requires OBD-II tools or two already-working keys to program.
Remote pairing works through the ignition cycle method. Transponder programming for the ID46 chip needs professional equipment. You cannot shortcut this one.
No self-programming at all on this generation. The ID46 rolling code smart key system requires professional OBD-II tools. Do not attempt it yourself or you risk locking out the system entirely.

Did You Know?
Back in 2007, Honda did something unusual with the first-generation Fit. They used a key blank that was compatible with the Honda S2000 sports car. A tiny economy hatchback sharing key DNA with a two-seat roadster. It meant cheaper blank availability for years, and locksmiths have always appreciated the crossover.
