A couple parked on the street near Moorpark College had the kind of morning nobody plans for. One key. Always meant to get a second one. The car had been theirs for a couple years and that spare kept getting pushed to next month.
The blade cracked at the pivot and snapped when one of them tried to work the door lock. Remote head in one hand, blade fragment stuck in the cylinder. Zero working keys, car sitting there.
I got the call and drove out to the Moorpark College area. First thing was the blade fragment in the door lock. Got that out clean, then decoded the lock to pull the key cut. The transponder chip inside the cracked fob housing was still reading fine, which changes the whole job. Instead of starting from scratch, I could work with what was intact.
Cut two new key blades to the decoded cut, transferred the chip data into fresh hardware, and verified both keys against the ignition and the door locks. Lock, unlock, all four buttons, ignition cycle. Both keys working before I packed up.
The whole job ran about 40 minutes on the street. They had two working keys instead of zero, and they paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted them. The dealer wasn't wrong that it was a real job. They were just wrong about how long it had to take and where it had to happen.
The chip inside a cracked housing is almost always fine. People assume a broken key means a lost chip. Usually it doesn't.
