Out in Peach Hill, a warehouse stocker had a key made for his 2011 FIT by another locksmith. Worked fine the first morning. By the end of the week, he was getting a key-not-detected warning on the dash about half the time. By day eight, it stopped starting the car reliably.
He assumed the car had developed an electrical problem. That's usually where people go when a key acts up after a fresh copy, because who thinks the locksmith got it wrong.
I met him in the lot and ran a read on the key before I said anything. The transponder chip inside didn't match what that FIT needed. A close chip, not the right chip. That's the failure mode: Honda's immobilizer can accept an initial handshake from a near-match chip, but after it runs its verification over multiple start cycles, it catches it. Not every Honda does this the same way, but 2011 FITs are known for it. The other locksmith probably didn't have the right blank and used what was available.
I also noticed the CR1616 in the fob was reading low. Easier to deal with both at once than send him back for a second call.
New key, correct chip, correct programming, fresh battery. I walked through every button and confirmed the start three times in the lot before I left. He'd already lost over a week of stress over something that should have been done right the first time. The dealer had quoted him a number that made him wince, and even that would have been a wait for parts.
What he paid me was a fraction of what they wanted, and it was done in his parking lot on his lunch break.
