How Honda Element Keys Changed Over the Years
1st Generation (Early)
Honda kept things simple here with a standard transponder remote head key. Your Element uses an ID46 chip and the GQ43VT05 remote running at 314.4 MHz. Three buttons, a CR2032 battery in the fob, and on-board programming that makes this one of the more straightforward Honda keys to replace.
1st Generation (Mid)
Honda added rolling code security to the ECU pairing process, but the hardware stayed the same. You still have a 3-button remote head key with an ID46 transponder chip and the same GQ43VT05 FCC ID. On-board programming still works for the remote portion, though the transponder needs professional tools to sync with your ECU.
1st Generation (Late)
The late-run 2009 through 2011 Element kept the same transponder remote head key (HO03-PT high security blade) with an ID46 chip and CR2032 battery. The Element never received push-button start. Programming the transponder still requires professional OBD-II tools, which we carry on every truck.
Which Key Does Your Honda Element Use?
A traditional metal key with a chunky plastic head that has lock, unlock, and trunk buttons built in. You turn it in the ignition to start, and the transponder chip inside talks to your engine computer.
Same physical key as the earlier models with three buttons and a standard blade. The difference is under the hood: Honda added rolling code security to the ECU pairing, but it looks and feels identical in your hand.
A traditional transponder remote head key (HO03-PT high security blade). The Element never received push-button start; you insert the key into the ignition like the earlier years.
What to Expect Price-Wise
Price includes the key blank, cutting, transponder programming, and testing; lockout service runs $95-$125.

Common Honda Element Key Problems
Key lock cylinder failure
Element door cylinders are notorious for wearing out: a design weakness, not your fault. Internal wafers degrade, making the key hard to turn or snap off. We can replace the cylinder, but a keyless retrofit via the green connector under the dash is smarter.
Transponder chip failure
Key slides in, engine cranks, but will not start. Security light may flash. The transponder chip in the head has failed or lost programming. We read the chip on-site with our diagnostic tools and either reprogram or replace it in your driveway.
Fob programming failure
Honda's ignition-cycle programming has a strict 5-second window per step, all doors closed and unlocked. Miss it or leave a door cracked and the fob will not pair. We see this in Simi Valley and Oxnard. Try carefully, or call (805) 790-8162.
Immobilizer sync loss
No-start 2007-2011 Element? Check first: was the battery recently disconnected or replaced? A swap can knock the immobilizer out of sync with the transponder. Car thinks it is stolen. On-board relearn fixes most; stubborn ones get OBD-II forced reset.
Can You Program a Honda Element Key Yourself?
You can program the remote lock and unlock buttons yourself using the ignition cycle method. Turn the key from OFF to ON three times within 5 seconds, then press the lock button. This pairs the remote functions only. It does not program the transponder chip that lets your car start, so you still need us for that part.
The transponder chip that communicates with your engine immobilizer cannot be programmed at home. It requires professional locksmith tools to sync the chip with your ECU. No shortcut here, no YouTube hack will get around it.

Did You Know?
Most people do not know this: Honda Element key fobs program their remote functions via a simple ignition cycle method that has not changed since the model launched in 2003. Three turns of the key within five seconds, and you are in programming mode. Honda kept this manual pairing process identical across every single model year through 2011, making the Element one of the few vehicles where the DIY remote procedure never got an update.
