Got a call from a guy up in the Riviera neighborhood in Santa Barbara. His 2008 Honda Element had been sitting in the driveway for two days because the key just stopped starting it. Engine cranked fine, gauges lit up, but the green key icon on the instrument cluster kept blinking and the motor wouldn't catch.
He told me he had already checked the fuses and swapped the main relay because that's what a forum told him to do. Still nothing.
I drove up and pulled his key out first. The blade was original Honda, HON66 profile, worn but readable. The problem was inside. His transponder chip, the ID46 sitting in the plastic head, had cracked at some point. Hairline, but enough. The immobilizer antenna ring around the ignition cylinder wasn't picking up a clean signal.
Cut a new K-HO03 blank on my Condor, seated a fresh PCF7936 chip, then connected through the OBD-II port to run Honda's immobilizer registration. The 2008 Element uses the older protocol so the procedure is pretty direct once you have the right hardware. Registered the new key, erased the old one, and the engine fired on the first turn.
He stood there watching the whole thing in his driveway. Said he almost had it towed to the dealer. That tow alone would have been a project getting down from the Riviera, and the dealer bill after that would have been a whole separate conversation.
