Got a call from a guy working at one of the warehouses down in the Funk Zone in Santa Barbara. His 2009 Element would crank in the morning, drive fine to work, then refuse to start at the end of his shift. Engine turned over but wouldn't fire. Immobilizer light on the dash blinking green instead of going solid, which on Hondas means the system is not seeing a valid transponder response.
He'd already had a key cut and programmed by another locksmith about eight days before. Worked great at first, then started this pattern.
I pulled the key apart on his tailgate. The other shop had used a generic 4D chip instead of the correct ID46 (PCF7936). Close enough to handshake with the immobilizer on initial programming, but Honda's HISS system runs a rolling verification over multiple drive cycles. Wrong chip family means it eventually fails the deeper check and the ECU locks you out.
I read the immobilizer data off his car with my VVDI2, confirmed the chip mismatch, and programmed a new HO03 key blank with the correct ID46 transponder matched to his ECU. His original key was long gone, so this was a full all-keys-lost procedure through the OBD port, pulling the security code from the PCM.
Took about 25 minutes. He stood there watching, eating a taco from the spot next door. The key has been working for months. The difference between a key that works and one that works for a week is the chip inside it.
