2006 Honda Element Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Over near Lost Canyons Golf Club in Simi Valley, a woman flagged me down in a parking lot on a Saturday. She volunteers at a nearby temple and she'd already had a bad experience. Another locksmith had come out, cut a new key for her 2006 Honda Element, charged her full price, and left. The key turned the ignition fine, engine cranked, then died after two seconds. Classic immobilizer rejection. The other tech told her the ECU had a module problem and bounced.
The car didn't have a module problem. It had a locksmith problem.
Honda's IMMO system on this generation Element uses the PGM-FI ECU to validate the ID46 transponder. The registration sequence has a timed security countdown. If you rush it or skip the write-to-permanent-memory step, the ECU accepts the key data temporarily but drops it. That is exactly what happened here.
I pulled out my HON66 Lishi and checked the mechanical cut first. It was fine. Then I connected through the OBD-II port with my IM608, cleared the failed key data from the previous attempt, ran a clean IMMO learn with the full security timer, and watched it write to permanent memory. Started the car. No two-second cutoff. Green key light off. I showed her the confirmed registration on my screen so she could see it with her own eyes.
She'd already paid the first guy, and I couldn't fix that part. But I could make sure the job was actually done right this time, on site, for way less than the dealer would have charged.
