Yes, and this is one of the more common Honda calls I get. The 2007 Element uses a remote-head key where the blade meets the plastic housing at a joint that takes a lot of daily stress. Over time that junction cracks, and when the blade separates it can stay in the cylinder.

Extraction first, then cut and program a replacement. The chip and remote electronics from the broken key can often be transferred to a new housing if they survived intact, which skips a reprogramming step. If the old chip is damaged, we program a fresh one on site. Either way, you're not getting towed to the dealer and waiting days for a key to be ordered.

What exactly is a transponder key and why does it matter for my 2007 Element?

The transponder key has a small chip embedded in the plastic head. When you turn the key, the ignition reads that chip. If the chip is missing, blank, or programmed to a different vehicle, the immobilizer cuts the engine off even if the blade turns fine.

That's why a key cut at a hardware store won't start this car. The blade might be perfect, but without the right chip enrolled to your specific vehicle, it won't go. Programming is part of the job every time.

My 2007 Element shows a key warning on the dash. Where do I start?

Start with the vehicle battery, not the key. A weak 12-volt battery in the car is one of the more common reasons older Hondas throw a key-related warning even when the key itself is fine. The immobilizer system needs clean, stable voltage to handshake with the chip correctly.

If the vehicle battery checks out, look at the key head itself. On this generation, the plastic housing can crack around the chip without being obvious. If the chip shifts inside the head, the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder loses the signal. Try a different key if you have a spare. If the spare works and the primary doesn't, the issue is the key, not the car.

Forum threads on Element owners clubs go back years on this. The consistent theme is cracked housings and, less often, worn chip contacts inside the head. Both are fixable without replacing the whole ignition.

Can I program a replacement key for my 2007 Element myself, or do I need a shop?

This generation has an onboard add-a-key sequence you can run yourself if you already have one working key. It's an ignition-turn procedure that doesn't need a scanner. The catch is that it only works when you have at least one functioning key to start the process. If you're adding a spare, that's an option worth knowing.

All-keys-lost is a different situation. No working key means no onboard sequence, and you'll need a locksmith or dealer with the right equipment to get back in and program from scratch. That's when you call me.

The buttons on my Element key stopped working but the car still starts. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. On the 2007 Element the transponder chip and the remote transmitter are in the same key head, but they run independently. The chip talking to the immobilizer has nothing to do with the remote signal going to the door locks.

Dead remote buttons usually come down to one of three things: the coin cell in the key head is depleted, the rubber button contacts have worn through, or the circuit board took moisture damage at some point. The blade and chip side of the key can be completely fine while the remote side is dead.

If the housing is still solid, a shell swap and fresh battery will often bring it back. If the board is corroded, a new remote-head key programmed on site is the cleaner fix. Either way, you're not looking at a full rekey of the car.
