Over in Seaside Park in Ventura, a guy was loading a surfboard into his Element and the key blade snapped clean off in the driver door lock. Half the blade stuck inside the cylinder, the remote head shell still in his hand.
He was calm about it, which honestly was refreshing. Just stood there holding the broken piece and said, "I figured this would happen eventually." Honda remote head keys have that reputation. The joint between the blade and the plastic head is a thin strip held by one small screw, and years of pocket carry and wiggling in the ignition wear it down. I extracted the broken blade piece from the lock cylinder, then moved his original HITAG2 transponder chip and the remote board out of the cracked shell into a stronger aftermarket housing. Cut a fresh blade by decoding his door lock on site. Since the chip itself was fine and already registered to his car's immobilizer, no programming was needed. The car recognized the transplanted chip on the first turn.
Tested all four buttons, walked back about 30 feet for range, ran three starts in a row. He stood by the board rack watching the whole thing and kept checking his phone like he expected it to take longer.
