2017 Honda FIT
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does it work on the 2017 Fit?

The smart key on the EX and EX-L trims is a fob you keep in your pocket. It communicates with the vehicle passively so the car detects it when you touch the door handle and when you press the start button. The 3-button fob also handles lock and unlock from a distance. There is still an emergency blade folded inside the fob for situations where the battery dies and you need to get in manually.

Q: How does a locksmith compare to the Honda dealer for this job?

The dealer splits it into two line items: the fob itself and the programming labor. Together those tend to run well into the hundreds, and that is before any tow if the car is not driveable. Then there is availability. Most Honda dealers will not do a same-day key job, and some require advance scheduling. A mobile locksmith shows up where the car is, does the cut and programming on site, and charges a fraction of what the dealer wanted.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2017 Fit. Can I program it myself?

Not on the smart key side. The 2017 Fit EX and EX-L smart key system requires professional diagnostic equipment to register a new fob. There is no button sequence, no ignition-turn trick, no DIY relearn for this setup. That kind of onboard self-programming only applies to certain older bladed transponder systems, not push-button smart key vehicles. The fob you bought online can still be used, but it needs someone with the right tools to pair it to your car.

Q: The touch sensor on my driver door handle stopped working but the key fob still locks and unlocks. What is going on?

If the fob buttons still work and the car starts fine, the fob is almost certainly not the problem. Touch unlock on these handles is handled by a capacitive sensor in the door handle itself. Dirt, moisture, or a wiring issue on that specific door can kill the touch response on one side while everything else works normally. Wipe the handle area down and retest.

2017 Honda FIT Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was working a job near the Hollywood Beach area of Oxnard when the call came in. Delivery driver, fast food parking lot, 10 at night. His only key to a 2017 Fit was gone, somewhere between stops. He had no idea what a VIN was, his registration was in the car, and he was already pricing tow trucks.

I kept him on the phone and walked him through it. Look through the windshield at the base of the glass on the driver's side. He found the VIN in about thirty seconds. Pulled his insurance app for the ownership info. That was all I needed to prep before I left.

When I got there, he was sitting on the curb. By the time I had the new fob built, programmed, and tested through all three buttons and the door handle touch points, he was standing and watching instead. He tested it himself, locked and unlocked a few times, touched the handle, pushed the start button. It took a second to register that it was actually working.

He drove home that night. The dealer was closed, would have needed a tow, and would have charged him a good chunk more than what I did. The VIN he almost missed through his own windshield is what made the whole job possible.

Honda FIT Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why is Honda smart key replacement so expensive?▼

A few things stack up on these. The fob itself has a transponder chip that has to be paired to your specific vehicle through the diagnostic port. It is not a generic signal, it is an encrypted handshake with the immobilizer, and it only gets confirmed once the programming tool completes the registration sequence. On top of that, the key blade has to be cut to your vehicle. Dealers charge for the part, the labor, and the appointment.
