I was parked on a street in La Colonia, Oxnard, doing a battery swap on another job, when I got a call from a guy who said his 2009 Honda Fit had been sitting in a lot for two days. He had one key and it stopped unlocking the doors remotely. The blade still worked in the door lock and the ignition, but the buttons did nothing.
He had already gone to a parts store and bought a CR2032 because someone there told him that was probably the issue. It was not the right battery. The CR1616 that belongs in that fob is noticeably thinner, and the CR2032 was wedged in crooked, making just enough contact to not obviously look wrong.
I was already nearby so I swung over. Popped the fob open on his hood. Pulled the wrong battery, seated a proper CR1616, snapped it back together, and the remotes started working before I even walked around the car to test all the doors.
He laughed a little and said he thought he was looking at a whole new key. I get that. When you don't know what battery goes in a specific fob, the parts store guess feels reasonable. But the CR1616 is specific enough that the wrong size can sit in there and fool you.
We tested lock, unlock, and the other buttons on both sides of the car before I called it done. No programming, no parts, just the right cell in the right fob. He saved a significant chunk compared to what the dealer would have charged him to walk in and diagnose the same thing.
