I got a call from a guy in La Colonia, over in Oxnard, who had a 2019 Honda Fit and a story I hear more than I should.
He had snapped the emergency insert blade off inside the door lock while trying to get in with the fob dead. Not the ignition, the door. The broken tip was lodged in the lock cylinder and he could not get the door open. He had already called one shop, and they walked him through what a full door lock cylinder replacement would run. He did not love that answer, so he called me.
I pulled up, and before I touched anything I asked him about the fob itself. He had not changed the battery. The fob was original to the car. I popped a fresh CR2032 in while we talked, and the door handle touch unlock came right back. That part of the problem was already solved.
The broken blade tip was still in the lock cylinder. I extracted it without disturbing the wafer stack inside, then decoded the lock by reading each wafer position directly. From that decode I cut a new insert blade on site. Fit it, cycled the lock a few times, smooth operation.
The fob was already re-paired to the car through the door handle. He pressed the start button, the car recognized the fob, and that was it. No cylinder replacement, no tow, nothing drilled out.
He mentioned the first shop's quote on the way out. I told him that kind of job usually sounds worse than it is when you have the right tools. He saved a good chunk and still made it to work that afternoon.
