SPA Platform Launch
Volvo built the V90 on their brand new SPA platform, and the key system reflected that ambition. Your 2017 to 2019 V90 uses a 3-button smart key with a Texas Crypto AES transponder chip, push-button start, and passive keyless entry. Programming requires both OBD-II access and server authentication through Volvo's security gateway, which means no shortcuts and no DIY.
Facelift 1, Same Security
Volvo updated the infotainment and introduced the Care Key as a backup option, but the security architecture stayed the same. You still have a Texas Crypto AES smart key with server authentication required for programming. The CEM module remains the brain of the immobilizer system, so the tools and process are identical to the earlier cars.
Facelift 2, Mild Hybrid Era
The 2022 brought mild-hybrid B5 and B6 engines as standard, plus a key tag option for minimalists. Under the hood of the security system, it is still the same Texas Crypto AES smart key talking to the CEM module. All-keys-lost situations require PIN extraction from the CEM, which is where professional tools and experience matter most.
Which Key Does Your V90 Use?
A proximity smart key with push-button start. The blade slides out for emergency door entry, but day to day you just keep it in your pocket and the car handles the rest.
Same smart key design as the earlier V90, with the same CR2032 battery and high-security blade. Volvo also introduced the Care Key during these years, which can limit top speed for secondary drivers.
Identical smart key to the earlier generations. The 2022 also offered a key tag option, but the standard fob is the same 3-button proximity key with a detachable high-security blade.

Remote Key Battery Drain
Constant signal polling in Keyless Drive mode is the culprit. Your V90 smart key always listens for the car, eating CR2032 batteries in as little as six months. If range is shrinking, swap the battery first. Two-minute fix, three dollars.
Keyless Entry Signal Interference
Press the door handle and nothing happens, or it works on the third try. Common in busy areas like downtown Ventura where 433MHz signal clutter interferes with passive entry antennas. Try the remote buttons. If they work fine, interference, not your key.
Immobilizer Sync Failure
Owners think the key died when the real problem started with a dead car battery. When the V90 12V gets replaced or drains, the CEM module can lose sync with your smart keys. Looks like key failure but is a comm breakdown. We resync with Autel IM608 or VVDI.
Detachable Blade Wear
Before assuming you need a new key, we check the blade. The high-security blade on 2017-2021 V90 keys wears faster than expected with regular mechanical cylinder use. Worn blade will not turn smoothly, and forcing it risks damaging the lock. Fresh cut on-site.
Can You Program a V90 Key Yourself?
No DIY self-programming procedure exists for the 2017 to 2019 V90. The immobilizer requires professional OBD-II tools and Volvo server authentication to add or replace keys.
Same story as the earlier V90. The CEM module and server authentication requirement mean there is no onboard procedure you can do at home. This one needs professional equipment.
The 2022 V90 requires CEM PIN extraction and server authentication for any key programming. No YouTube tutorial or aftermarket gadget will get around this. You need a locksmith or a dealer.
