How the S90 Key System Evolved
SPA Platform Launch
This is where Volvo's security got serious. The S90 launched on the SPA platform with a 4-button proximity smart key, a Texas Crypto AES transponder chip, and Volvo's CEM-based immobilizer system. Programming requires server authentication through VIDA or equivalent dealer-level tools, so there are no shortcuts or DIY workarounds on this generation.
First Facelift
Volvo updated the infotainment and added remote window control through the fob, but the key system stayed the same. You still have a 4-button smart key with a Texas Crypto AES chip, CR2032 battery, and the same server-authenticated CEM immobilizer. The security architecture did not change, which means the same tools and process apply.
Second Facelift
The mild-hybrid B6 powertrain arrived, and keyless locking through the door handles became standard. Under the hood of the security system, though, it is the same CEM-based immobilizer with server authentication. Your smart key still uses an ID 48 chip and a high-security blade, and programming still requires professional Volvo diagnostic access.
Final SPA Generation
Google built-in infotainment changed the diagnostics picture slightly, and the Recharge PHEV joined the Plus trim. The key itself remains a 4-button proximity smart key with Texas Crypto AES chip and CR2032 battery. Server authentication through the CEM module is still required for all key programming.
Which Key Does Your S90 Use?
A slim proximity fob that starts your car when you press the button with the key in your pocket. It has a hidden high-security emergency blade inside for manual door entry.
Same smart key design as the earlier S90, with the addition of remote window venting through the fob. The emergency blade and push-button start work identically.
Identical form factor to earlier years. Works with the updated keyless door handle locking system. Still uses a CR2032 battery and high-security blade.
The final SPA-generation smart key. Same 4-button layout and CR2032 battery. Works with Google-based infotainment but the key hardware is unchanged.

Common S90 Key Problems
Key Fob Battery Drain
Your S90 proximity key broadcasts continuously so the car detects it at the handles. That constant transmission eats CR2032 batteries faster than expected, especially if the car sits. Fading range means a tired battery; fresh cell, two minutes.
Immobilizer Sync Failure
We check the fob battery first. A low or recently replaced cell can desync the transponder from the CEM module, leaving your S90 cranking but not starting. A CEM reset with our diagnostic tools gets key and immobilizer talking again without replacing anything.
Keyless Entry Range Loss
Your S90 should detect the smart key from 1-1.5 meters out. If you have to press the fob against the handle to unlock, the CEM antenna or wiring may be wearing. Common on 2020-and-newer fleet vehicles around Oxnard and Camarillo with heavy daily use.
Proximity Sensor False Triggers
Owners think their S90 is being broken into when doors unlock or lock on their own. Real culprit is the fob in a pocket near the handle, triggering the proximity sensor. Software quirk on 2017-2019 models. A VIDA fob firmware update resolves it.
Can You Program a Volvo S90 Key Yourself?
No self-programming option exists. The S90 uses Volvo's CEM-based immobilizer with server authentication, which requires professional diagnostic tools like VIDA, AutoHex II, or Autel IM608 with a Volvo subscription.
Same server-authenticated system as the earlier S90. There is no OBD-II self-programming procedure and no way to add a key without professional Volvo diagnostic access.
Still requires server authentication through the CEM module. No DIY method, no onboard programming sequence, no workaround. You need a locksmith with the right Volvo tools or a dealer.
The 2024 S90 continues with the same locked-down immobilizer system. Professional tools and server tokens are required for any key programming.
