2017 Volvo S90
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement smart key last on the S90?

Years, if the battery gets changed on schedule and the fob does not take a beating. The CR2032 in the S90 fob is standard and easy to find. Change it before the car starts giving low-battery warnings on the dash rather than after, because running it down to zero can sometimes trigger a re-enrollment issue depending on how the module handles the loss of signal. The fob shell itself holds up well.

Q: What if the new key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

Call us and we come back. That is the whole answer on the warranty side. On the technical side: key enrollment on the 2017 S90 requires diagnostic equipment and a connection to the vehicle's security system. All keys have to be registered in one session, meaning if something goes wrong and we have to start over, it is not a five-minute redo.

Q: I have one working key. Can I add a second S90 smart key without losing the first one?

Yes, and having that working key with you actually makes the job smoother. The enrollment process requires all keys to be present and registered in the same session, so we bring the new fob, connect to the vehicle with our diagnostic tools, and register both at once. The existing key does not get wiped or disabled. This is the preferred scenario and it is faster than an all-keys-lost situation.

Q: The S90 shows a key-not-detected warning but the car still starts. What is going on?

Usually a weak battery or a contact issue inside the fob. The car is picking up just enough signal to start but not enough to fully satisfy the receiver. Start with the battery even if it is not old. If the warning clears, you are done. If it comes back, open the fob and check the contact tabs. If neither fixes it, the fob's internal antenna or RF board may be degrading, and replacement is the next step.

2017 Volvo S90 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Oxnard's Historic District, I pulled up behind a dark blue S90 sitting half in a driveway, half on the brick-lined street. The owner had gotten a key-not-detected warning that morning, then the car decided it was done letting him in at all. He had already swapped the battery once. Still nothing.

The fob looked fine on the outside. I popped it open on the trunk lid and the battery was brand new, seated correctly, but one of the contact tabs had a slight inward bend, just enough to lose connection under pressure. I straightened it, cleaned both contact points, and reseated the CR2032.

Then I walked every function: door unlock, lock, the other two buttons, touch-handle unlock on both front doors, and start. The car woke right up like nothing had happened. That warning was gone.

He had already called a dealer before reaching me. They were ready to book him in, quoted a multi-day turnaround, and the number they gave him was not small. He came out ahead by a wide margin, and the fix took about twenty minutes on the curb.

Not every S90 call ends that cleanly. Sometimes the fob genuinely needs to be replaced and enrolled with diagnostic tools. But on this one, the hardware was fine. Just needed someone to look at it the right way.

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Volvo vehicles?▼

We use professional-grade keys built to OEM specification for the 2017 S90. This matters more on Volvos than on a lot of other vehicles because the enrollment process is strict. Volvo forum owners have documented cases where low-grade aftermarket fobs either failed to pair entirely or paired but lost connection after a few weeks. The RF hardware inside the fob has to meet the spec the car expects, or the body control module rejects it.
