2024 Volvo S90
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What is a smart key and why does my 2024 Volvo S90 use one?

A smart key is a proximity-based fob that communicates wirelessly with the vehicle to authorize door access and engine start. Your S90's key has four buttons and carries a programmed transponder that the vehicle's security system recognizes. If that pairing isn't present, the car won't start regardless of whether the key blade fits anything. The short version: cutting a key blank gets you into the car. Programming is what makes it run. Both have to be right.

Q: My Volvo is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I try first?

First, place the fob directly on the marked spot in the center console area rather than just having it in your pocket or bag. The S90 has a backup antenna in that area that can read a weak or struggling fob well enough to authorize a start. If that gets you running, the fob itself is the issue and the next step is a fresh CR2032 with the battery seated flat and flush.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it, or is it more involved than that?

It depends on what you bought. The 2024 S90 requires that the replacement fob be compatible with the vehicle's current security system generation. Not every aftermarket or salvage fob listed online will work, and a fob pulled from another S90 of a different year or configuration may not pair correctly even with the right tools. If you have the fob in hand, I can check compatibility before you commit to anything.

Q: All my keys are gone. Can a new key still be made for the S90, or is that a dealer-only job?

Not dealer-only. All-keys-lost on the 2024 S90 is a job that requires professional diagnostic equipment and the right security access, but that's exactly what I carry. The process involves clearing the existing key registry in the vehicle's security system and enrolling the new fob fresh. The old lost keys get wiped from the system so they can't be used to start the car even if someone finds them.

2024 Volvo S90 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman parked downtown on Main Street, right in the middle of the lunch crowd. Her 2024 S90 had thrown a key-not-detected warning and she was standing next to it, late for something, not in the mood for a long explanation.

She had already tried clicking the fob a dozen times. Nothing. Doors were unlocked because she'd gotten out before it flagged, but the car wouldn't start.

I walked her through the console placement trick over the phone while I was still driving to her. She tried it, car started, she exhaled loud enough that I heard it. But that's not a fix, that's a clue. Weak battery, bad contact, or a fob that's starting to drop signal. I told her to stay put.

When I got there I opened the fob on my kit bag right there on the sidewalk. The CR2032 inside looked fine on a quick glance but was sitting with a slight tilt on one contact. Reseated it, snapped the housing closed, walked the perimeter of the car testing the door handle sensors, ran the lock and unlock, and did three clean starts from normal carry distance. Everything came back clean.

No new key needed. No programming, no module work, no trip to the dealer. She asked what the dealer would have done. I said they probably would have started by ordering a replacement fob and gone from there. She didn't say anything, just nodded and got back in the car.

That gap between what the problem actually is and what gets billed for it is the whole reason I do this job the way I do it.

Volvo S90 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key shell is cracking. Can you swap it without reprogramming?▼

Usually yes. On the 2024 S90 smart key, the programming lives in the internal electronics, not the plastic shell. If the board and battery contacts are intact, I can transfer the internals into a new compatible housing and the fob keeps its pairing to the vehicle. No re-enrollment, no dealer visit, no waiting on a programmed unit to be shipped. Where it gets more complicated is moisture damage.
