Got called out to Thompson Boulevard district for a 2023 S90 that was playing games. Owner said the key worked fine for months, then started throwing "Key not in vehicle" randomly.
She'd already changed the CR2032 twice. Still getting the error. The car would start if she held the fob right against the start button, but the passive entry was dead. No beep when she touched the door handle, had to use the button on the fob every time.
I checked her YGOHUF8423 fob with my VVDI2. Battery contacts were clean, CR2032 tested good, but the transponder response was weak. These Hitag Pro chips can degrade after a few years of heat cycles. The CEM3 module was being picky about the signal strength.
Programmed a new fob with fresh Hitag Pro chip, made sure the CEM3 accepted it clean on first handshake. While I was at it, showed her the new backup reader location in the cupholder since she was still looking for it in the armrest like the older models.
The passive entry came back to life instantly. Door handles worked, no more error messages. She mentioned the dealer wanted to keep the car for two days to "diagnose the CEM module." We handled it in her driveway in under an hour for way less than their diagnostic fee alone.
