How the C70 Key System Changed Over the Years
First Generation Convertible
On-board programming makes this one straightforward. Your C70 uses a 3-button flip key with an ID 44 transponder chip and a high security blade. We connect through the OBD port, sync the chip to your Volvo's immobilizer, and you are driving again.
Mid Generation Update
Volvo upgraded to the ID 48 chip and 3-button flip key layout, but some T5 models got an updated ECU that needs VIDA diagnostics for programming. Still on-board capable in most cases. The high security blade and CR2032 battery stayed the same.
Late Generation Security Upgrade
This is where security got serious. Volvo kept the ID 48 chip, which means OBD-II programming with advanced tools like the Tango or Autel IM608. Same 3-button flip key shell, but the immobilizer handshake is more complex. No shortcuts on these.
Final Generation Smart Key
Your C70 moved to a proximity smart key with push-button start. Still uses the ID 48 chip, but programming requires server authentication through VIDA/DICE. That adds time and cost compared to earlier years, and we will explain all of that before we roll out to you.
Which Key Does Your C70 Use?
A black flip key with lock, unlock, and trunk buttons. The blade folds into the fob. You insert this into the ignition to start the car.
Same flip key design as the earlier C70. Three buttons, fold-out high security blade, and a CR2032 battery inside.
Looks identical to the 2006-2007 key, but the chip inside changed to ID 48. That means different programming equipment is needed even though the key looks the same.
A proximity smart key that stays in your pocket. Push a button to start. There is a hidden emergency blade inside for when the battery dies.
What Your C70 Key Costs
Every price includes the key blank, cutting, programming, and testing at your location in Ventura County.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
We test your existing key system before recommending anything. The dealer just quotes you a new key.
Common C70 Key Problems
Transponder Failure
Owners blame the starter or battery when the real culprit is the transponder chip inside the key. The ID 44 and ID 48 chips in 2004-2010 C70s degrade over time. Engine cranks but will not fire. We test chip signal on-site and replace the key if dead.
Key Fob Battery Drain
First check is the battery. CR2032 cells in C70 flip keys drain faster than expected with frequent remote use. Weak battery causes intermittent failures or complete fob silence. Swap first. Still broken? Call (805) 790-8162 and we diagnose the fob electronics.
Immobilizer Sync Loss
The CEM module in your 2008-2013 C70 can lose its handshake with the key after a battery replacement or jump start. Immobilizer thinks the key is not authorized. Just a sync issue, needs a relearn through VIDA. We handle this in Simi Valley or Thousand Oaks.
Blade Wear
Your C70 key turns the ignition hundreds of times a month. The high-security blade wears down and one day will not turn. Force it and you damage the cylinder, turning a $150 fix into a $500 one. We cut a fresh blade on-site and program it to your immobilizer.
Can You Program a C70 Key Yourself?
No DIY self-programming procedure exists for these years. The Volvo CEM immobilizer requires professional diagnostic tools like VIDA or the Autel IM608 to sync a new transponder.
Same deal as the earlier C70. There is no ignition-based self-programming option. You need a locksmith with the right Volvo diagnostics.
The ID 48 chip requires OBD-II programming with advanced tools. No shortcut, no YouTube hack. This one needs professional equipment.
The smart key system requires VIDA/DICE server authentication. This is the most involved C70 key job. We handle it, but we will be upfront about the process and timeline before we start.

Did You Know?
The 2004-2013 Volvo C70 was the last front-wheel-drive convertible Volvo ever produced. It shared the P1 platform with the S40 and V50, but added a unique retractable hardtop that folded into the trunk in about 30 seconds. Volvo never made another convertible after the C70 ended production in 2013. Kind of makes yours a collector's piece.
