A guy near the Oxnard Auto Center had already paid another locksmith for a 2010 Volvo C70 key that never once started the car. Engine cranked every time, but the immobilizer killed fuel within a second. The other tech told him the CEM was fried and left.
The CEM was fine.
What happened was the other locksmith tried a straight OBD program on a P1 platform that requires bench access to the CEM for an all-keys-lost situation. Without pulling the secured EEPROM data from the CEM board first, the key registration just never completes. The CEM on these P1 Volvos, part number 31254903 on his car, holds all the key data in encrypted memory. You skip that step, you get nothing.
I used my Lishi HU101 to verify the blade cut matched, then pulled his CEM from behind the glove box. Read it on the bench with my IM608 Pro, generated correct key data from the EEPROM dump, wrote it back, and reinstalled. Finished the rest of the programming through OBD. His KR55WK49266 fob came alive on the first try. Six buttons, proximity unlock, push start, all working.
I ran three consecutive start-and-shutdown cycles while he watched the DIM. No immobilizer warning, no fault codes. I showed him the IM608 screen confirming the key was permanently registered in the CEM.
He had already sunk money into the first locksmith, gone. But at least this time the job was done right, on site, for a good chunk less than the dealer wanted.
