I lost all my keys to my 2011 Volvo C70. Can you still make a new one?

Yes, and it is one of the more involved jobs in the Volvo world, so I want to be honest about what it takes.

The 2011 C70 sits on Volvo's P1 platform and its security lives in the central electronic module. For an all-keys-lost situation, the process involves reading data from that module, generating new key information from that data, cutting the blade, and programming the new fob to the vehicle. On these older CEM-based Volvos, some of that work happens at the bench rather than just through the OBD port. It takes time, usually somewhere in the range of one to three hours on site depending on what we find.

Do I really need to tow my C70 to the dealer if I have no working key?

Plan on one to three hours. The C70 on this platform requires module access, bench reading, key data generation, blade cutting, and then programming back to the vehicle. There is a sequence to it and you cannot skip steps. If everything goes smoothly it can land closer to the shorter end, but Volvo AKL is not a 20-minute job and anyone quoting that fast should be questioned.

My C70 fob works fine up close but the range dropped a lot. What causes that on these?

Usually the CR2450 is getting weak before it dies completely. On the 2011 C70, reduced range is often the first sign rather than a sudden failure. The fob will still communicate at close range but stop responding from across a parking lot.

The other thing I see on these older C70 fobs is corrosion on the battery contacts inside the housing, especially if the key has ever gotten wet or been stored somewhere humid. Swap the CR2450 first. If range comes back, you are done. If it stays short, open the housing and check the contact plate before assuming the fob itself is bad.

The crack near the blade release on my C70 fob, is that just cosmetic or does it matter?

It matters. That spot on the C70 fob housing is where stress concentrates every time you deploy or retract the blade, and once the plastic cracks there, the two halves of the housing start flexing slightly against each other. That flex lets moisture reach the circuit board and the battery contacts. I have opened C70 fobs where the crack looked minor on the outside and the contact plate inside was already showing oxidation.

If the crack is small and the fob is working, a new battery and keeping it dry buys you some time. If the housing is separating or the button feel has gone soft on one side, the practical move is a new fob housing before the circuit board gets damaged and turns a simple swap into a full replacement and reprogramming job.
