Over near the Fillmore & Western Railway, a guy at the cobbler shop flagged me down about his 2006 C70 convertible. Another locksmith had cut and programmed a key for him the week before. Worked great for about five days. Then the car started rejecting it, intermittent at first, then every evening like clockwork. Mornings were fine. By day seven it was dead.
He was convinced his CEM was going out. Quoted me the forum posts he'd been reading. I get it, the P2 platform C70 CEM is known for issues, board failures, water intrusion behind the glove box. But his dash wasn't throwing other electrical gremlins, just "Remote Key Not Accepted."
I pulled the fob apart on his hood. First thing: the CR2032 was basically empty, which explained the shrinking detection range. Second thing, and this was the real problem: the previous locksmith had loaded the wrong transponder chip variant. Volvo's immobilizer on these is a Megamos 48 system, and it is picky about which specific ID48 glass chip goes in. A close-but-wrong chip can pass the initial handshake with the CEM and then fail the rolling crypto on the second authentication. That is exactly what intermittent rejection looks like.
I programmed a fresh LQNP2T-APU with the correct ID48 chip matched to his CEM using my VVDI2, dropped in a new CR2032, and ran a full cycle test. Locks, trunk, panic, all five buttons.
That key has been working for months. The difference between a Volvo key that lasts and one that dies after five days is the chip variant inside the fob.
