There's a cobbler shop on Central Avenue in Downtown Fillmore. The owner had a 2006 C70 convertible, and he'd already been down the rabbit hole with another locksmith before he called me.
His key had worked fine for about five days after the other shop programmed it. Then the car started acting up in the evenings. It would start in the morning without complaint, but by the time he locked up and walked out to the parking lot, the fob would get rejected. He figured it was the body control module going bad. Old Volvos get a reputation for weird electrical gremlins, and he'd already convinced himself he was looking at a module replacement.
When I got there, I popped the fob open on the trunk lid before doing anything else. The CR2032 was reading low. That explained some of the intermittent behavior, but a weak battery doesn't cause a key to get fully rejected after days of working. I ran a read on the key and found the problem pretty quickly. The transponder type in that flip key did not match what his car's immobilizer was expecting. It had passed an initial handshake and then started failing the deeper verification. The other locksmith had used a close but wrong chip, and Volvo's immobilizer is not forgiving about that. It gave it a few cycles and then stopped accepting it.
I sourced the correct replacement, programmed it properly with both the remote and transponder sides enrolled the way the system expects, and dropped in a fresh CR2032 while I had it open. Tested every button, tested the ignition, locked and unlocked the car a few times to confirm the body control module was seeing the remote reliably.
He asked me what the dealer would have charged. I told him to call and ask. He did, right there in the parking lot. He saved a good chunk.
