Got a call from the Harvard Boulevard area in Santa Paula. Woman with a 2008 C70 convertible, the hardtop retractable, parked outside a walk-in clinic. She needed a spare smart key and had a story.
Her previous locksmith had no BSIS license, no Volvo experience, and showed up with a generic tool that couldn't handshake with the CEM module. He left with the car still not programmed. She was out money and out of patience. Before calling me she looked up my license, LCO 6792, on the BSIS website. Public record. That's what made her dial my number.
I pulled the CEM from under the dash on the passenger side, read the EEPROM data on the bench with my ACDP, and generated the key file for a new KR55WK49266. Cut the emergency blade, programmed the fob, reinstalled the module. Then the testing: remote lock, remote unlock, trunk release, panic, the fold-down and fold-up roof buttons on the six-button remote, and ignition start with the fob in the slot.
She watched the whole thing from about three feet away. When the roof cycled open on command from the new key, she just nodded slowly like she'd been waiting weeks for something to finally work right.
NASTF access matters on Volvo because the CEM encryption will reject unauthorized tools or, worse, let them corrupt the module mid-write. That is not a risk I take and not one she needed to take twice.
