Type 812 (US Market)
OBD-II programming is the only way to get a new key working on these. Your 500L uses a 3-button remote head key with a Philips ID46 (PCF7946) transponder chip and a high-security blade. We pull the PIN code, program the transponder through the SKIM immobilizer module, and cut the blade on-site.
Type 812 Facelift
OBD-II programming carries over from the earlier models with minor electronics updates under the hood. Same 3-button remote head key, same Philips ID46 (PCF7946) chip, same Fiat CODE/SKIM immobilizer. We verify ECU firmware compatibility before programming to make sure everything syncs on the first try.
Type 812 Late Facelift
OBD-II is still the method here, but some 2017 units need Fiat WTECH server access for the PIN code. This is the final US model year, and we carry the tools to handle both server-based and direct PIN extraction. Same key, same chip, same result in your driveway.
Which Key Does Your Fiat 500L Use?
A flip-style key with lock, unlock, and trunk buttons. The transponder chip is built into the key head, and the blade is high-security cut, so it needs a specialized machine.

Transponder Synchronization Failure
When the engine cranks but will not start, the real problem is an incorrect PIN code or a SKIM module not reset during programming. We verify the PIN source and run the full SKIM reset before cutting, so you do not own a programmed key the car refuses.
Remote Head Key Blade Wear
First thing we check on a 500L that is hard to turn is the blade. High-security cuts wear faster than expected, especially on 2014-2016 models. If worn, we cut a fresh blade on-site using a precision machine matched to your original lock code.
Fob Battery Drain
The CR2032 should last a couple years, but a known internal circuit issue on 2015-2017 models causes rapid drain, killing a fresh battery in weeks. If swapping does not fix intermittent remote functions, the fob circuit board likely needs replacement.
SKIM Module Fault
Your key turns, security light stays on, nothing happens. That is a SKIM module failure on the 500L. When the body control module is bad, no key programming fixes it. The module needs replacement and VIN-specific flashing. We diagnose on-site in Simi Valley or Oxnard.
Can You Program a Fiat 500L Key Yourself?
No DIY programming procedure exists for the 2014-2015 Fiat 500L. The SKIM immobilizer requires professional diagnostic tools to extract the PIN code and program the transponder via OBD-II.
Same story as the earlier models. You need a professional tool like the Autel IM608 or Smart Pro to read the PIN, precode the chip, and program through OBD-II. No ignition cycle shortcut exists.
The 2017 is no different. Professional OBD-II programming is the only path. Some 2017 units also require Fiat WTECH server access for the PIN, which adds another layer that only professional tools can handle.
